Merrill Lynch discusses next gen console war

Merrill Lynch: Users likely to prefer Xbox 360 over PS3
By Dan Nystedt, IDG News Service

Microsoft Corp. is likely to win the next round of the game console fight against Sony Corp. based on a potentially huge cost difference that could see the Xbox 360 selling for half the price of a PlayStation 3 (PS3) by the end of next year, investment firm Merrill Lynch said in a Wednesday analysis.

Based on a breakdown of the parts being used inside the two game machines, Merrill Lynch said the “PS3 will not only be significantly more costly than Xbox 360 at launch, but will continue to operate at a cost disadvantage for several years.”

The investment banker said Sony’s PS3 is an impressive machine, but the costly components inside could raise the price of a PS3 to around US$500 when it launches in the spring of 2006. By then, the Xbox 360 could be selling for US$249, Merrill Lynch estimated.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. could not be reached for comment due to a public holiday in Japan.

Microsoft has announced two versions of the Xbox 360, a basic version for US$300 and a premium edition for US$400.

The lower cost could put as many as 10 million Xbox 360 game machines into users’ hands by the end of 2006, said Merrill Lynch.

“As volumes ramp up, Microsoft should see an improved ability to lower hardware costs,” said Merrill Lynch, making the Xbox 360 an even better deal for users. It would also encourage game developers to put their latest titles out more quickly, to capture the huge audience.

The biggest cost issue for the PS3 is the Cell processor, Merrill Lynch said. Although Sony hopes the new microprocessor architecture could find its way into many new products beyond just the PS3, thereby lowering its per chip cost, Merrill Lynch believes the Cell won’t gain much ground in other markets.

“Processor architectures have been in consolidation mode for the last 5 years, and we think it’s going to be difficult for Sony to find takers for Cell outside of the PS3,” the investment banking firm said.

One recent example of such consolidation was Apple Computer Inc.’s June decision to move its Macintosh computers to Intel Corp. processors by the end of 2007. The computer maker has been using PowerPC chips developed by IBM Corp. and Freescale Semiconductor Inc. for the past decade.

Heavy research costs and expensive manufacturing could cause the Cell to cost about US$160 per chip initially, Merrill Lynch said, compared to the US$100 for the PowerPC chips used in the Xbox 360.

The Blu-ray drive planned for the PS3 will also add about a US$75 cost disadvantage, Merrill Lynch said, compared to the DVD-ROM drive Microsoft plans to install in the Xbox 360.

Merrill Lynch also highlighted Sony’s weaker financial situation compared to the strong position at Microsoft Corp.

“All of this might not matter were Sony in a position to take large losses on the PS3, but the company’s financial situation raises questions about just how much money Sony is going to be willing to lose,” the investment firm said.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has a less expensive game console and likely a six-month lead over the PS3 in getting to market, Merrill Lynch said. Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox 360 on Nov. 22 in the U.S., followed by Europe on Dec. 2 and Japan on Dec. 10.

Honestly, I kind of feel bad for Sony for having such a less than stellar financial footing against Microsoft. I'm sure that they would have had a better try if they didn't have that Blu-Ray stuff in their system. I do like the Cell processor but it will be equivalent to the hard drive in the current-gen. Messed up cause I am so going to support both companies when I get the chance. I hope that Sony does come on the up cause I'd definitely like to have a lot of their games in my house too. I hear that Sony has great business ethics as well as treats its employees beautifully?? Them coming out second is going to kill them, but there are so many people who are seriously still solid for their company. Will be an interesting holiday season in 2006......

also, the funny thing is, when the PS3 comes out and if Microsoft cuts the price for the premium Xbox 360, I think it will just kill Sony's party. The reason is the 360 is just going to get better and better each with games and the system itself IMO, so the cutomer will have a lot to think about...Should I get a Xbox 360 that is a great system already and now for a pretty damn good price, Or should I get A PS3 system that has technology feauters built in that most likely won't even be used, ala (bluy-Ray/1080p format). Just some things to think about.

I like that thought but a lot of people don't know to look for information like that. It's about the brand, but I do think that they'll lose a heck of a lot of developers. If they drop their prices too and their games sell off the shack........I will be weeping for Sony. And on that other note, the definition quality is very much interesting too. More things coming to light about the technology.......

FF, it'll just take 2 PS3 screenshots for you to start making threads about "I'm thinking about selling my 360."

I can see it now. You're known for it.

Sony is just pulling a head fake on Microsoft. The Playstation 3 will be cheaper then the Xbox or about the same price, Microsoft fell for the head fake selling the expensive system at 400+ dollars, Sony hasnt revealed the Price for the Ps3 and BTW No console in serious contention has sold for more then 300 bucks ever, Until that is that Microsoft fell for Sonys head fake.

Only Quote on price from from Sony""I'm not going to reveal [the PS3's] price today. I'm going to only say that it'll be expensive."

It's not like Sony hasn't done so before. The PSP, when it launched in Japan, cost just $186, despite rampant speculation the portable device would cost upwards to $300. Granted, those were analyst expectations and not company proclamations, but Sony sure didn't go out of its way to guide those analysts lower. In fact, it even stayed silent after Atari CEO Bruno Bonnell lobbed a public verbal grenade, predicting the machine would cost $500.

By prepping consumers to spend $400 or $500, then announcing a retail price of $300, you convince them they're getting a bargain and potentially create an even bigger buying rush than a system launch normally does.

Microsoft, meanwhile, scares off some potential buyers with its $400 price tag, giving it a smaller head start in the race to a substantial installed customer base and erasing some of the competitive advantage it has in being first to market.

I hope you don't mind me putting that into my sig. That is the funniest thing I've heard this month. Still, FF has a good point if it was true. If Sony did make the system at that incredibly low price of $300, I'd be impressed. HOWEVER, there isn't anything seriously going for PS3 to give it more love than the XBOX 360 as of right now. XBOX has that great online stuff. Hard drives would be about equal with both systems seeing the Sony sold their crap for $100 last time with the dumb game. Well, it depends on those games at launch. If Sony does make a significant distinguishing launch giving them some good games, then it would have a better chance. Sony does have the problem of the Blu-ray which is expensive already, and the cell chips that will be a pain in the wallet tossed on the consumer somewhat. Yeah, Sony is doomed.......

The whole point of the article is that Sony physically can't make the PS3 for cheaper. Not unless they want to take an absolute bath on the hardware. I'd love to buy the Sony super genius strategy, but I don't believe in super geniuses (nor evil geniuses, for that matter).

Basically, if you took the names off the consoles, the 360 looks like a good bet to grab a lion's share of the market. The only thing that distorts the scenario for a lot of people is that Sony is involved and they did incredibly well in the last two rounds of the console wars. But the circumstances have changed quite a bit since then. Sony still has the Playstation name, but that's about the only advantage they do have between now and when they actually get the PS3 on the shelves. And that could be some time from now.
