PS3 Price tag... What are you thinking?

Here's what CNN posted yesterday, but they revised it today:

First firm indication on pricing emerges from Sony's recently appointed CEO

UPDATE: The comments attributed to Howard Stringer in this interview have now been confuted, and should instead be attributed to an unnamed Sony source cited by the Hollywood Reporter. See this news story for more details.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer has given the clearest indication yet of the company's launch plans for PlayStation 3, stating that the next-gen system will enter the market at between $300 and $400 when it arrives in mid-2006.

Speaking with FORTUNE magazine, Stringer confirmed that the PS3 will initially be sold at a significant loss in order to drive the Blu-Ray next-generation DVD standard out into the marketplace.

His comments confirm speculation that Sony will be subsidising the Blu-Ray hardware for PS3, and should quell fears that the console would enter the market at a very high price point due to the cost of the Blu-Ray drives.

The FORTUNE piece cites mid-2006 as the launch window for PS3 in Japan, with US launch to follow a few months later, but it's not clear whether this is speculation on the part of the magazine, as those dates are not directly attributed to Stringer.

Another element which does directly cite the British-born Sony boss, however, is regarding the media bundle which will ship with the PS3 - with Stringer stating that the console will come with a bundle of games, movies and TV shows.

This move is presumably designed to showcase the advantages of the Blu-Ray format, on which Sony is pinning much of its hope for the next few years - and, indeed, for the next-gen console war, where the use of Blu-Ray gives the PS3 arguably its most significant hardware advantage over the Xbox 360, which uses standard DVD discs.

Some speculation has emerged over whether the content Stringer refers to might ship on a built-in hard drive on the PS3, but the firm has already stated that the console won't ship with an internal hard drive - instead offering users the option of adding one using a 2.5" hard drive bay on the back of the machine.

Stringer's comments come, of course, as Microsoft's Xbox 360 arrives in North America - timing which is undoubtedly entirely deliberate on Sony's part. Microsoft officially backs the HD-DVD standard which competes directly with the Blu-Ray standard, but has not opted to include it in Xbox 360 - however, it has hinted that it may release an updated version of the console with the ability to play back HD-DVD media discs at some point in future.

And they changed it because of this:

Comments published in a CNN article yesterday purporting to be from Sony CEO Howard Stringer regarding the planned pricing for PlayStation 3 have been removed after it emerged that he had not said anything on the question.

    ...

However, on closer inspection, the article was actually citing an anonymous source within Sony - a fine detail which the CNN article apparently missed, setting the whole rumour mill rolling once again.

    Some interesting info:
"Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, said recently that Sony will sell the PS3 at a loss in order to populate the world with Sony's favored high-definition DVD standard, known as Blu-ray. If millions of Blu-ray PlayStations find their way into living rooms, Sony figures, movie studios will be compelled to embrace it over the rival standard, known as HD-DVD. Yes, brace yourself for another Betamax vs. VHS standards war."

My guess is, no HDD included, $399. They'll have to be selling at a loss but they can't afford to have the price $100 more than the 360. They are already struggling right now.

Sony isn't struggling...Sony still owns the market over seas plus they are making a KILLING with regards to handhelds. I say it will be about $50 more then both the core and premium XB 360's.

Sony is having a hard time right now even though they have a majority of the gaming market share. They've been in trouble for quite some time now. The thing that allowed sony to absorb losses was the ps2. Sony pictures helped a little with Spiderman, but it is mostly ps2.

I doubt ps3 will do as well as ps2. It will still win, but im saying that ps3 will win by a smaller margin, and the "playstation" buffer for sony will be a lot smaller.

EDIT: But I don't know what will become of PS3, maybe it'll blow 360 away. With the technology they said it will have, it could..*shrugs*

Nivek. I think he means sony as a whole is struggling. I did a small report on it and basically everything besides the PS2 and Spiderman loses money for Sony.

Okay. HD-DVD player or Blu-Ray Players. Which one can play DVDs that are out now, and which one will be the least expensive?

the thing that will give sony a profit is their gameplay, and in the past years, IMO, they have had the best games out of all systems.

Re: PS3 Price tag... What are you thinking?

I doubt Sony will sell the PS3 at a higher price than the 360, I mean that's suicide.

Microsoft has been running the 360 strong with the $400 package, so Sony better bundle up or offer some significantly better hardware to even it out a little. I'm not really in a rush for a next gen system, but I know in 2007 the Xbox and PS2 will become the new PSone, so hopefully I'll be making the right decision sometime between now and next December.

Sony's hardware is killin' the 360, but I really can't see a big difference in terms of graphics, and it'll suck to know EA and VC are just gonna port games over to one system to another.
