Unless your rifle or machine gun is out of ammo or you are VERY, VERY close the pistol has little function in this game, other than to offer you increased foot speed when switched to it.

Meh, more or less. A pistol should be able to kill a guy in one shot if you get the heart or head, like any bullet.

Agreed, but you can't really expect much from a pistol unless its close range. That's why rifles were invented.
