Originally posted by ExtremeGamerI think that's a bit harsh. The demand is high. I love how everyone forgets the PS2 launch, it was months before it even appeared again. At least some 360's are trickling into stores.
sure the demand is high, but what about the EB's & Gamestops who took all of these preorders, & still now have people waiting, meanwhile their online shops are guaranteeing delivery even if you ordered later? & MS must be really thrilled with the Japan launch too - with plenty of consoles still sitting around on shelves.. that to me seems to be a little nuts... unfortunately i cant really recall the ps2 launch because those consoles (xbox included), i got later on..Comment

but this launch went haywire... MS started the ball rolling that picked up EB & Gamestop along the way.. anyway, i am glad that while i would like to have one, i am not entirely in dire need to have one right away..Comment

As a consumer, I don't care what has happened in the past. I don't care that the launch for the PS2 6 years ago (or whenever it was) was even worse. I don't care that every launch has had high demand. I'm sure the Model T had some flaws at first as well. At some point, you have to figure out how to do things right.
These companies have chosen to enter the arena, and deserve criticism when they foul up things. Microsoft, in this instance, chose to pursue an ultra-aggressive launch, targeting several continents right off the bat. As a result, scores of systems sit on shelves in Japan while many U.S. consumers wait for systems they already have ordered and, in some cases, for which they have paid full price.
Now, it doesn't really matter to me. I am 28 years-old, and I don't really have much time for video games anymore. But it does matter to many people. Children all across the nation hoped for a 360 to be under the tree Christmas Day, only to be disappointed when they ran down the stairs. Other consumers just plain want their system, and have waited quite some time to get it, with the knowledge that had the launch not been botched, they very well might have the unit in their hands currently.
Of course, the batch of systems currently in Japan is not a panacea; there are other reasons for the stateside shortage, and Microsoft is not to blame for those. Even allowing for the systems currently in Japan, many consumers still would be without a system. But at least those consumers would not have to sit idly by fully with the knowledge that there are systems gathering dust somewhere.
Furthermore, while I do not know the exact circumstances of the Gamestop.com systems, but Microsoft easily could prevent---by contract or otherwise---Gamestop (or Barnes & Noble or whichever company owns Gamestop) from selling systems online before filling existing customer orders.
Would I do that were I Microsoft? No ****ing way. Why alienate a retailer when that retailer sells many, many Microsoft products, and when all the 360s are going to sell out anyway. But if I made that business decision, then I would reasonably expect the ensuing criticism.
Which is the whole point: Microsoft made business decisions, and consumers have a right to criticize those decisions. We have a right to criticize the worldwide launch. We have a right to criticize Microsoft's handling of its retailers. We have a right to criticize Microsoft's PR intentionally releasing arguably false information in an attempt to soften the effect of the shortage.
And when we do so, "but it has happened before to other companies" is not an excuse. You, the company, entered the arena, and criticism is the cost of doing business. Something tells me that Microsoft can handle the heat.Quit making your stupid YouTube videos and start playing the game.Comment
