"January 4, 2006 - Industry analysts have estimated sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 next-generation game console to be about 1.3 million units since its release on November 22nd or less than half of what the company projected to sell before the end of the current fiscal quarter.
According to Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund, the near-universal (at least in the United States and Europe) shortages of the console are significantly impacting Microsoft's initial sales estimates. In his upcoming report, Sherlund states that "it's clear that something disrupted the supply of Xbox 360 shipments in the quarter, and there does not appear to be any end of year catch-up in shipments."
Sherlund goes on to estimate that the company may be producing 600,000 to 800,000 units per month which will meet the expected demand for 2 million units in the March quarter.
These sentiments were also expressed by Bank of America analyst Gary Cooper who believes that Microsoft has told retailers to "expect minimal replenishments of Xbox 360s in the month of January."
