    Deja Vu?

Just want to let you know, this is just how Sony does things. I'm not saying we won't hear anything at CES, I'm just letting you know how much different Sony has been this time around. With the PS2 this happened.

November 27th: 1998 - Sega RELEASED the Dreamcast in Japan at 260$. People thought the graphics were awe-inspiring.

Sony doesn't even unveil their next system until March 2nd: 1999. During the initial unveiling, no games were shown, no tech details, Ken talks about the Emotion Engine.

Sony finally formally unveils the PS2 all the way on May 11th, 1999, a full 3 months after the initial announcement of the system. But still, no games are shown, nothing but a few technical details on the system itself.

September 9th, 1999. Sega releases the Dreamcast here in the United States. System sells out, flies off shelves, gamers are amazed at Soul Calibur.

February 18th, 2000, Sony for the first time shows off playable PS2 games to the public during the Playstation Festival. Nearly a full year after the systems unveiling. Dreamcast still selling strong in the US, falls flat in Japan.

Playstation 2 goes on sale in Japan on March 4th, 2000. Not even a month after the initial playable demos of games were showcased. Even without any first party titles or big name titles, THOUSANDS of people line up to take home the console. Stores are sold out before they officially open and a little less then a million consoles sell. Sony later announces a 980,000 unit mark and 500,000 of those being sold through Playstation Online.

May 10th, 2000. Sony announces plans to ship the PS2 to the US in October.

September 20th, 2000 Sony announces difficulty of manufactoring PS2's for the US due to a new graphic synthesizer design that failed.

October 26th, the Playstation 2 is released in the US selling 500,000 consoles at launch with 100,000 consoles per week hitting stores after that, always selling out. PS2's remained sold out until March 21st, 2001 despite the 100,000 a week shipments. ( And you thought the Xbox360 was popular.... )

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I think you know what I'm getting at here. With the PS3, we heard about the PS3 at E3, it was shown WITH titles, launch time period, controller, actual system case, etc. With the PS2, the system was announced and not even shown until many months later. Noone laid their hands on a PS2 game until only less then a month before the PS2 launched in Japan.

Now, if you think this wait is bad just think about all of us who had to endure an almost 2 year long torture session. And the Dreamcast was around, being talked about, being bragged about due to Soul Calibur and many other titles and selling like hotcakes up until a few months before the US launch of the PS2. Yet Sony did what they did, despite Segas success, they are just that confident.

So relax people. We are getting it a hell of alot better this time around then we did back during the events leading up to the PS2 launch. Why do you think I wouldn't be suprised to see absolutely nothing up until a month before the Japanese or US launch of the PS3? Because its happened twice now, with the PS1 and the PS2. Its how Sony works, its how they build hype and anticipation.
I'm just tryin' to put a smile back on the face of the people that expected to see something about PS3 at CES (including me).

I also found something really weird... Why does it seem 360 and Dreamcast have sooo much in common? Close to the same release date, didn't sell well in Japan (and they both had Dead or Alive), sold out in US, had a great online system but only a small percentage of the owners used it, was released alot earlier than the other consoles, has everyone awed in the graphics department, wow.

Just an interesting read, again I'm not implying that PS3 > 360 or anything of that nature (even though this is gonna make a lot of people ).

    Re: Deja Vu?

you can't compare the current situation to the Dreamcast because the Dreamcast had absolutely horrible 3rd party support (no EA, etc), and that's what killed them in the end...Xbox 360 doesn't have that problem, so I'd really hesitate to compare the parallels, other than that Sony will be tight-lipped and not release info for a while.

I'm sorry guys, but the 360 = Dreamcast is too overplayed, and has been talked to death here.
