I don't know where these guys get there information from, but Kataguri (sp?) himself said that they would not have a Hard Drive standard. It's been covered too many times, and confirmed. I don't how CNN got ahold of that information, but maybe they need to doublecheck. If it is $500 w/ a HDD, then I may pick one up eventually. If it's $500 w/o a Hard Drive, which is what I've speculated for a while, then I'm going to have to pass.

The PS3 is going to be one expensive system if it's $500 w/o HD. Just think of the price after you add in another controller, 2 or 3 games, extended warranty, and tax.

But even with that said, I think the PS3 will be a hot seller.

This is pretty insane if you think about it. There will always be the people that will buy it at 500 without a HHD, and even ones that would pay even more. But for a lot of people, this is just out of range, 500 bucks for a video game system, they are just going to go buy a 360.

At this point this is all speculation. I think Sony people are a lot smarter than many of us (besides their president) and most of these people make a living just analyzing data so they will probably know what is a good price for the PS3 to be unless they are taking a huge gamble on blu-ray and it turns out to be a failure.

Based on the prices I have seen for stand alone blueray players, up to $1800, I think getting a PS3 the had the ability to play blueray out the box for $500 is quite a deal, even without a HDD. Unfortunaty for Sony, most people don't know what blueray is, don't have an HDTV, don't have an HDTV that supports bluray at full resolution or could care less about blueray and be content with their DVD player. The majority of buyers simply want the latest playstation.

Most consumers are not early adopters, but Sony is forcing them to be by bundling a brand new unproven, non-unified format with the PS3, effectively making Joe consumer an early adopter. This is just fine for me, especially at $500. For someone that could care less about blueray, to have to pay a $200 premium over the comparable 360 core, is asking a bit much. There are plenty of die hard playstation fans the will pay whatever and plenty of people that see the bargain in a $500 bluray player but not as many as Sony is banking on.

Sony will really have to make Blueray a household name if it ships the PS3 at $500 or more. So then consumers can know what they are getting for that xtra $200 dollars. I hope to get one when they come out, even though my TV is not completly compatable, there will be way around that. My prediction is the PS3 will come out around the 2006 holiday season for $500, giving bluray a chance to make a presence and creating some brand awareness, plus it will be the hot holiday gift that people would pay an arm and a leg for anyhow.

I don't think Sony will suffer from shipping a year later than the 360, especially in Japan, besides it's not a sprint it's a marathon.

EDIT: i take that back... the article mentions that the PS3 will include a HDD, which is the first i have heard of that being standard

I could see that. Remember Sony is expecting to take a billion loss on the launch of the PS3

From the CES website stating that the controller of the PS3 was not in the case due to the fact that it was being re-designed

The whole system is still listed as a prototype in reality, so the the entire look could still change.

It'd be stupid if they didn't. No one will miss it when they scrap Boomerang completely. I've showed some of my friends some pics of PS3 (casual gamers, first time seeing it for them) and everyone said that sh*t was ugly
