Xbox 360 component AV Cable question...

I currently have a NON HD TV. (I’ll be getting a HDTV sometime around July)

I am thinking of buying the XBOX 360 COMPONENT AV CABLE.

Now, I know I won’t get any HD benefit from that until I buy a HDTV.

What I would like to know, however, is can I still use the XBOX 360 COMPONENT AV CABLE in the interim for 5:1 Dolby Digital sound.

Ie, can I plug the cable into a normal TV…and then use the audio parts of it? Will the cable work on a non HDTV etc?

Any help / advice GREATLY appreciated!

Don't you have a optical cable for your 5.1? I didnt know you could have 5.1 without one.

Sound is completely separate from the component av cable which is strictly video. I'm not sure where your coming from.

I am not a tech guy...as you can see

At the moment, I am just using the TV for sound.

I also have a DVD player that is hooked up to an amp + 5:1 speakers etc...

I guess what I am saying is...if I get this av cable, can i easily use those same speakers / amp for my XB360?

Ie, take them out of the DVD player...plug them into this cable for the 360 in 5:1?

If your non-HDTV you have now has component in, then yes you could do what you ask. I have HDTV and dolby optical here at my house and when I went to my mothers for Christmas I connected up using the same cables to my mom's non-HDTV and just used the audio left/right cables (since there was no receiver there to use the optical cable I left it at home).

As for your taking the connector out of the DVD player and just switching it to the xbox 360, that will work so long as the connector you are talking about is a normal toslink optical cable. You would just remove that from your dvd player and plug that into the cable on the 360 component cable set and you'd be ready to roll. Then whenever you do get an HDTV you would be ready to roll on both fronts.

However, if your current TV doesn't have component in then you will not be able to do it because the optical for 5.1 sound is on the back of the 360 connector so you couldn't use your current video from the cable set you have now and another audio since the component cables all connect into the same big a/v in port in the back of your 360.
