It’s almost as if the Xbox 360 is showing off. Winking its little ring of light at you. Exploding some particle effect fireworks right in your face just because it can. We’re talking about dynamic lighting and ambiance, and it would be nothing more than visual showboating if it weren’t for developers like Starbreeze, who see the huge possibilities in real-time changeable atmospheres and have utilized it in The Darkness, a title that would have been largely impossible on the previous generations’ consoles.

Alan Wake has a lot in common with that game, but deserves to be placed at the opposite end of the spectrum because where in The Darkness light is your deadly enemy, in Alan Wake it’s your only hope. Wake’s chilling prophecy of a world ruled by evil minions of darkness has leapt off the pages of his novel and into his life - and it’s refreshing to play a game where your hopes aren’t loaded into a gun (Wake is no Max Payne, notes Alan Wake’s poetically-named writer Sam Lake, ruefully...) but rather down the barrel of a common garage torch.

But even the appearance of light can be unsettling. Remedy have clearly been rifling through their horror catalog to see how all the classics use their mise-en-scene (yeah, we went to film school - it means all that’s framed within the camera) to their advantage. Alan Wake is no different. The day/night cycles can make the exact same landscape look like a completely different scenario depending on the hour, and with the player worn down and really ragged from constant harassment, even the most romantic sunset will have you frantically scrabbling in your inventory pocket in case those sinister leaves fluttering around your feet “start something.” Your 360 is once again engaging in psychological warfare with you - but on a whole new level. It’s a step beyond the “boo” mentality of Doom, and it’s more advanced even than F.E.A.R.’s jarring peaks and endless troughs. In Alan Wake, the Xbox 360, under Remedy’s orders, is letting you - here’s the good bit - scare yourself.

Just like you should never listen to the hype, here you shouldn’t pay heed to Alan Wake’s lack of hype - this is yet another integral foundation in Microsoft’s domineering fortress of exclusives. And from what we’ve seen, it’s a banker.

Nice little preview there. I wish the game would just come out sooner, rather than later.

No date has been released, I keep hearing 2008 for a release though.

Sounds good. It'd be nice to have another excellent survival horror series out there. All we have is Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame. Alone In The Dark lost its luster, and Siren shifted into a Japanese exclusive series.

2008? I thought it was coming out this year. It seemed pretty well into development.

I hope it comes out this year, it's one of the few games I'm actually looking forward to.

man, 2008 is a loong ways away when your thinking about a game that has been on radar since like 6 months before the 360 launched.

2008 does make since going by Remedy's track record. They started working on the tech for Max Payne in 97 or 98, and the first game came out in 2001. Remedy starting working on the tech for Alan Wake in 2004.

We may get some stuff out of GDC with Remedy set to speak there.

                      Date/Time: Wednesday (March 7, 2007) 4:00pm — 5:00pm

                      Session Description
Our industry is rapidly changing to a distributed model. While this will create a great environment for innovation-based studios, successful studio structures of the future will have to differ radically from those of the past. Completely new ways of thinking about team and project management will be required.

This session discusses how Remedy's team structure, every-day tools, and processes are tailored to meet the challenge of Alan Wake - a project that is simultaneously breaking new ground in fresh game design, cinematic storytelling, and incredible technology. How do you manage a project like that, and still manage to sleep at night?

                        Images of Alan Wake

Finnish TV show Pelit has put online some kind of new images of Alan Wake. According to an admin over at the official forums, the images are from an old build from 2006, and many changes have of course been done. It's still nice to look at though, so enjoy the beauty.

                          Remedy Interview

Pretty good interview, even though Remedy is keeping a tight lid on most things.

There is also a really great Alan Wake FAQ on the official website. Lots of great info. The game world is 36 square miles. That's very big. In comparison, Oblivion was 16 square miles.

Remedy Interview - Part 3: "The Power Behind Wake"

A quick recap before we continue with our interview with Remedy, this being the final part! So far we've talked about their past - the early days of developing, past glories with Max Payne, etc. - but a good slice of the chatting was about their current project, Alan Wake. In our last part, Petri Järvilehto and Markus Mäki kindly told us little snippets of the game's style, premise and overall gameplay but since they were still working full steam on its creation, we couldn't really discuss too much about it without spoiling the fun for everyone! However, Wake is substantially different to Payne in almost every aspect - the most significant being the change from having linear "tube" levels to a living, open, fully-explorable world.

So we were particularly keen on gaining some idea as to what technology they were using for Alan Wake, as this would help us to tell you what kind of a PC system you're going to need to run this game and thoroughly enjoy it. It is worth repeating that Remedy are currently keeping the lid on pretty much all of the details surrounding Alan Wake. They're working flat out on its development, so we were quite lucky to get this information out of them - especially it was rather late in the day!

Remedy had already taken us through a real-time demonstration of Alan Wake, so it was time to get under the hood…

I really hope this turns out well.

With next-gen Fatal Frame MIA, Silent Hill 5 going domestic (ugh), Alone In The Dark being a major question mark, and Resident Evil becoming even more action-based, it'd be nice for survival horror fans to get another great series.

After the big end to 2007 and excluding GTA4, will this game be the game to get in 2008?

The graphics look amazing. I just worry if the story will actually grab me.
