I have two and as long as you give it a good initial charge it works as it should. People have complained of it not charging the controller when the system is off, but that is because it hadnt had a 100% full charge yet.

In order for you to charge it while the system is off...have the plug and play thing plugged in, then press the power button on the system to turn it off. Should work.

I tried this before and it doesn't work, it'd says you need the system on to charge the controller.

You can also plug it into your computer's USB port and it will charge it through there.

Really? Mine charges when I know I've turned the system off, or at least i know there's no game showing up on my screen...-goes off to play around with it-

Have the plug and play system plugged in. Turn on the system using the controller, then turn off the system.

Mine still recognizes it's charging and the system is still running, although it's not on, it's like just a low buzz and stuff.

Did you read my first post? Your battery needs a full charge before it will work. Mine did the same thing, I charged it up (and left it even though the light was green) and every since it works fine with the system off. Of course the controller needs to be plugged in BEFORE the system is turned off, but it works just fine.

I've had rechargeable batteries before the 360 was released for a digital camera which were AA that have fitted right into my gaming time. It was a four pack deal from walmart for about $20 with the charger. So that might be an option which can cover two controllers and charge while you sleep.
