Here is the back story/info: I bought a PS2 a year or so after it was released. I bought a lot of games, mostly sports, loved them, and also love the PS2 controller. About two years ago I bought an Special Edition Halo X-Box, and enjoyed that, but ultimately missed my PS2. I like the PS2 contoller more, my friends play PS2, and in general, I like the system on a whole. I ultimately sold the Xbox and games on eBay, and a year or less later my PS2 broke, partially. I fixed the laser height and temporarily fixed the PS2. I bought a new controller and memory card, and Madden 2006. Two days later my PS2 broke for good. I sold Madden while I could still get near-retail for it, and haven't played a console since.
I don't really want a Xbox 360, nor do I want to spend $500+ on a PS3. However, I miss sports gaming. I have become less into gaming lately, but lately there are a few things that have made me think about picking up a PS2 again.
Specifically, the games.. Rugby 2006, EA College Baseball, and the new Winning Eleven are coming out for PS2 in the near future. I think MVP was/is the best baseball game I've played, I am getting more and more into world soccer every week, and having not watched a game of Rugby in my life, the game looks amazingly fun, maybe even approachable by someone like myself.
Also, I already have a controller and memory card. That may seem like a small issue, but I don't want to spend a lot to get back into gaming. By already having a a controller and memory card, I am able to save myself $50 or so.
Xbox is nice, and usually has superior graphics, but I am a PS2 guy, as I have gone back to it, even after owning and enjoying Xbox.
Writing this has me noticing I am probably answering my own question, but I would appreciate feedback on a few things...
- 1) Regarding MVP (College Baseball) and Winning Eleven, even Rugby.. How stark a difference is there between graphics on the two consoles? What about slowdown/performance?
2) How long do you think they will continue to develop games for PS2? If I buy one this week, will I have sports games released to last me a year or so? I generally play baseball, football, and will check out other genres if they are good enough.
3) Worse case scenario: There are only three games coming out (Rugby, NCAA Baseball, and Winning Eleven) that I am interested in and going to buy for the rest of the PS2's lifecycle... Is it still worth it to buy a PS2 again for these games? This is likely the most important question and the basis for this post.
Lastly, it is worth noting that initially I do not intend to spend $500+ on a console and game, whether that be PS3, 360, or Nintendo's product (which I likely wouldn't buy anyway).
My question is mostly about whether you, personally, would consider buying a console for 2-3 games, or if I am wasting $150 (PS2 price) by doing so?
I don't see myself investing in a Xbox and accessories, as I already owned one and sold it, but I am hoping that the PS2 games are still playable and don't suffer too much slowdown in comparison to their Xbox counterparts. This question is also important to me.
This has turned into a long rambling post, and I apologize for that, but I would greatly appreciate any feedback to any or all of the questions above. $150 isn't a big deal initially, but if I am also going to be buying games, it starts to become an investment, and I'd like to get feedback before going through with it.
Thanks!
