PS3 = No pre-owns or rentals?

Sorry if this has been talked about already but...

I just read something in the January game informer:

"...Sony has also developed technology that could be used to block the playing of used games on the console. Rumor has it that the company has secured a patent for technology developed by Playstation creator Ken Kutaragi that would encrypt an authentication code upon the software. This could make a game playable only on the PS3 it was first played on, although Sony has not announced whether this technology would be used on the PS3 or not"

Uhhh...that would be the most customer unfriendly move EVAH. That would pretty much screw retailers, as they make a bundle on Pre-owned sales.

NO Pre-owns, NO rentals? Bye Bye Gamefly? No borrowing your buddys copy, or taking your copy of Tiger Woods 07 over a friends house? Wow. 3rd parties would make a mint on PS3 traveling cases.

I seriously doubt Sony would make a monumental error of stripping the consumer of the ability to trade in PS3 games. The fact that they've developed the tech is interesting though...

It's been discussed in at least one thread http://forums.operationsports.com/vB...hlight=rentals. I think I read that sony will not implement this.

Forget it's an old rumor and there's nothing to it. Yes Sony floated the trail balloon by their very own wacky K.K. and he said that he could use DRM technology in the PS3 if he wanted to and that it was avaliable.

It's not going to happen it's suicide for Sony it was just another one of stupid Ken's remarks and he took it back.

If they did this I would NEVER buy the PS3 in fact I would sell my PS2 and get a Xbox 360. I don't have the money for both so I will wait for the PS3 to drop then decide. If they did that forget SONY
