If he's a reputable seller he should refund your money or send you another drive. I had a Thompson drive in my xbox and it worked fine for 2+ years.

Is there any other reason the drive would give dirty disc errors?

Not that I know of, but I'm not an xbox technician.

          PIECE OF JUNK

Before I put my fist through my xbox; could anything else be causing this? I don't want to rip the seller apart and later find out the drive is fine. I've already sent a very polite email to "aliuy" on ebay, but unless he agrees to either ship me a new drive (preferrably a philips or samsung, not a thompson) for free, or completely refund my money including shipping, there's going to be a major problem.
I had that same problem and since you've already ripped your system apart. Here's what I did to fix it, reseat all the connections in the Xbox. Disconnect and reconnect every connection on the system board, every drive, your power supply connections etc.

That fixed mine for good and it was a launch Xbox. Can't promise you the same result but it worked for me.

It's not giving you any error codes? Mine gave me some codes when my DVD drive went bad. I too had a Phillips and got a Thompson on Ebay a few months back. Since I'm not great with electronics a friend swapped them for me and it's worked perfectly ever since.

My guess is the DVD laser/drive is fine...there might be something else wrong with it. Check this website for help: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/

I've only gotten an error code once ever (I believe it was 07, but I could be wrong). That, however, was entirely me fault. I played for too many hours in a row and the hard drive got hot, so it automatically shut itself off until it cooled down. When I tried it a couple hours later it worked perfectly fine.

All I've ever gotten are dirty disc errors from the dashboard. Maybe two or three times a game locked up with the black screen saying DDE, but almost always from when the system is turned on.

Before I came in to write this I opened up the box and checked the connections- they're good. In fact, just to test and see what would happen, I unplugged the yellow harness from the dvd and turned the system on. That resulted in christmas lights and a "your xbox needs service". I then did the same with the grey harness and got the same message, so I'm pretty sure everything is hooked up fine. My thought is that it could be the hard drive. It's been making some horrible sounds lately; intermittent scratching and "glucking/glubbing" noises. The thing is, my hard drive seems to work fine. I can play songs and everything, but the dash is a little slow to start up. It's strange. The little xbox intro comes up, and then it takes a few seconds (sometimes close to 10) for the white Microsoft to show up underneath. Then the dash pauses before the Music, Settings, Xbox Live, Memory thing floats in slowly. Weird.

Re: Xbox dvd drive is dead

I've begun to think that because my hard drive seems to be dying, maybe it's time to just replace the system. How much is a new xbox (not 360), $150? I figure with the system, one controller, and a few games I can get at least $50-60. For a brand new system that won't give me hassles and will run a lot smoother, I think it's money well spent.

Edit: What's with the bundles? Are the refurbished going to break in a week, or do they come with a warranty?

Another option would be to trade in my old xbox and most of the games (minus splinter cell chaos theory, and a couple others) for the 360. For those that have traded in systems before, how much can I expect to get? I have two controllers (one of them a rip off brand- don't know why I bought it, it's junk compared to the original), a memory card, and the system itself. Does it matter that the system doesn't work properly, or will they even bother checking?
