360 DVDs big enough?
Good article, I knew about procedural synthesis but the examples shown in the article are amazing. I'm a little more confident that multi-disc games will be rare.

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
Great find, Stiffarmleft.
It'd be great if the Xbox 360 had a hi-def DVD drive, but as shown, it's really not necessary. Sony's been successful in "framing" that debate in their favor, but neither developers for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been clamoring for 10GB+ discs for their games. This article illustrates why quite nicely.
A larger hard drive on the Xbox 360 would have been much more valuable, IMHO, but Microsoft had to make decisions regarding cost and sticker price in order to sell as many units as possible in the narrow window between it's and the PS3's release.
In comparison, the PS3's raison d'etre is Blu-Ray, and getting it into consumers' hands however possible so they can (and I think, will) win the latest VHS/Betamax-type format war. Making a better gaming system is of secondary importance as Sony is desperate for another revenue-generating side of their business.
It will be very interesting to see what the PS3 is priced at, and how much of a loss per unit Sony is able to absorb.Shawn Drotar

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
Exactly and I was never worried and Microsoft has said that they are working on newer types of dvd compression. Microsoft's next system will probably need more capacity but for now DVD9 is plenty. Heck Obilivion is being released on one DVD and that's not a small game.Originally posted by stiffarmleftGood article, I knew about procedural synthesis but the examples shown in the article are amazing. Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
This idea that xbox 360 is inferior to PS3 because of disc format is beyond stupid. SO WHAT if a game needs 3 discs. 3 DVD discs would still be cheaper to produce then 1 blueray disc. Did we complain when games used 5 Disc's on PS1, um NO."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
I'm not sure if anyone remembers how many times I have said this in seperate threads in the past. The DVD's that games are made on now still have pleanty of room, like I said before Blue-Ray in my eyes in Sony's way to hype gamers up to buy there system. I said in the other threads thats a regular DVD hold about 4.7GB, and GTA holds like 2.8GB or somthing like that and GTA is a huge game, so there is is still like 2gb left on a DVD with a game that big. A Blue-Ray disk can hold like 12.9 gb or somthing liike that, thats a big waste IMO if the companys making the game aren't even filling up the regular DVD's then why would Sony even bother doing Blue-Ray knowing no game is going to even use 75% of that space, you go figure that one.

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
regular DVD's can be played on the ps3, so im intrested to see if any developers will actually take use of the blu ray technology and put games on them, since obviously it cost much more just to make a blu ray disc in the first place.Comment

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
Actually, DVD-9 is about 8 Gb, a single layer BR disk is 25 GB and dual layer around 50 Gb.Originally posted by FootballForeverI'm not sure if anyone remembers how many times I have said this in seperate threads in the past. Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
The article is a bit skewed as they fail to mention about the space needed for HD Quality cutscenes and animations. WMV-9, and MPEG-2 encoded material needs lots of space. They also fail to mention or talk about High Definition Material and what type of space is needed. True High Definition gaming which means uncompressed or minimal compressed material can not be realized on a standard DVD for obvious space reasons. As a general rule the more compression the less quality the image is going to be whether it be for video or in game animation. Sooner or later the 360 is going to have to cut corners due to lack of disk space. Tecmo will tell you how important space can be as they have already nearly ran out of room with Ninja Gaiden and the latest DOA pushing beyond 6 gigs (which the article failed to mention) Imagine if the game had True High Definition cutscenes.

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
Great article, but then I was really thinking about the high definition. Looking at this technology, I'm still wondering if society is going to pick up on these HD type of movements so quickly. DVD space is needed. How much is a dual layered DVD-9? Isn't it suppose to be like 15 or something like that? I'm sure that could cut it. Definitely can't wait to see both systems hitting higher speeds.......Comment

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
That was a great article and after reading this it solidifies what I thought before with the regular XBOX and even PS2 games not filling up the damn discs. People were in a panic over the 360 not having HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I bet that by the time the system reaches the end of it's life cycle that developers won't even be close to filling the DVD's up do to much better compression programs coming out.Originally posted by stiffarmleftGood article, I knew about procedural synthesis but the examples shown in the article are amazing. Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
I bet that PS3 games end up costing more than the $60 that we are paying for 360 games. If a 360 game on a DVD or DVD-9 cost us $60, what will a PS3 games cost since it's on a Blu-Ray disc which is going to be more expensive, $70?Originally posted by dagger55regular DVD's can be played on the ps3, so im intrested to see if any developers will actually take use of the blu ray technology and put games on them, since obviously it cost much more just to make a blu ray disc in the first place.Comment

Re: 360 DVDs big enough?
It's hard to say how this will pan out. I always prefer more space, at the very least MORE than the old system. Since there's no hardrive developers potentially can have less space to work with. PS1 to PS2 was a big difference, I see in two to three years the space being fully utilized. I don't see the next-gen moving as fast as this one, it's going to take years to make profit on the 360. Once they do that they risk having an outdated console because a LOT can change in the technology world in 2 to 3 years.
Oh an I hate the word compression. Why spend thousands of dollars on equipment to get a watered down image.
If MS would of bundled the hardrive in this wouldn't be an issue.Last edited by Erv; 01-22-2006, 07:59 AM.Comment
