    Videogamers on 60 minutes

Just saw a segment on videogame players on 60 minutes. One 7 year old videogame player already has a sponsor. In South Korea, matches (I assume FPS) are shown on tv and draw big ratings. The professional videogamers even need bodyguards to keep them away from the mobs of fans.

Once again the age of 30 was brought up as the average age of gamers.

One professor even called a specific videogame player as an athlete.

I'm sure the segment will soon be up at cbs.com

I saw the last part of the segment.

As for the games televised in Korea I know Starcraft still has a huge following and some groups total in the tens of thousands in terms of members.

Not a bad way for the guy to make $150,000.

I always wondered if I could do videogaming for a living. I've come to the conclusion: HELL NAW!! I'm definitely going to take a look at this joint though when it pops up on CBS. If someone gets it, drop a link.

On another note, ya'll think a show of video gamers going head to head would get rave ratings over here if it was like a weekly thing or somethign like that? Kind of like Madden Nation on ESPN? I'd definitely love to see those different things. They could have like cameras in the various rooms and just hop back in forth. Or they could get people to walk up and play against each other like a reality type of show I guess. Maybe I'm just tired huh??

I enjoy playing games, it's what i do in my down time when i'm not out with friends and whatnot. I don't think I'd enjoy being a "pro" gamer in Halo, Quake, or something. At some point it becomes work, just like any job, and I'd have to think the fun of playing a game would get sucked out of it.

Actually, there was a show on G4TV when it first debuted that was exactly like you described. Not the walk up in play but the first thing you said. It was a show where 2, four on four teams would play 3 games and the contest went by a points system. What made the show suck however was that they showed the same damn games every single day. All they ever played was Mech Assult or Unreal Tourney and threw some other BS in between. I remember them playing Street Fighter, DOA and Tribes but Mech Assualt or Unreal were always on the show. It bored me to death.

No kidding. It'd just become a nightmare - guys cheesing and glitching everywhere. Less about gaming and more about finding and exploiting game flaws. It's be like NFL players intentionally using the "tuck rule" all the time to win football games... ugh.
                I'd hate it.

Agreed. Anybody who is good enough to play Madden for a living is a definite cheeser and they have waaay too much time on their hands.

I went to South Korea in april 2004 for a vacation. While watching tv I came accross a channel that seemed to be showing some kind of video game. later on announcers came on and I realized that it was starcraft and it basically had it's own cable channel there.
