    360 Router Question

Hello guys, I've got a question that I wanted to throw out to the experts here on the boards. Just to see if you guys could help me out?

Here it goes...I'm going to BestBuy the 2nd. week of Feb. to maybe pick up my HDTV, and an network wireless adapter for a $100.00. My question center's around which router you would recommend for what I've got set up.

    1) My computer has high speed internet and is located downstairs. But, my 360 is located upstairs so I would want one with no loss in connection. However, from what I've been reading that some are very temperamental in how well they work, and some models don't work with xbox live. This info I found at the Circuit City website. It just didn't make sense. Why buy a router for gaming on-line and it doesn't work with xbox live?

    2) Here's is my second parameter to tie in with what I stated above. I would be looking for a router that would allow me to connect a PS3 into it later, and it should be able to let someone use the computer downstairs if one or the both of us are on-line upstairs in our rooms. My brother is getting the PS3 when it come out, but we don't know what type of on-line hook-up's/adapter's there will be with his system? And nobody in the house has a laptop computer to hook up in to it. So there is my question and I won't be going up for about a week so I'll keep checking back. Thanks.

First Off thanks for your answer... If I decide to get a laptop later during the summer does this still all hold true?

Yes, try the WRT54G however don't buy the ones from retail stores that have the "easy" button on it (version 5). The newer ones with this button are the dumbed down versions that have very little memory and capability in comparison to the first ones. Cisco did this after the buyout because these routers had the same functionality as the ones they sold for thousands of dollars provided you flashed them with the community based 3rd party firmware out there that is Linux based. Try finding one that is version 2.2 or 3 on eBay.

A good solution for you would be to buy two of these routers and link them together wirelessly instead of buying a wireless gaming adapter. It would be cheaper and potentially better as you would just need to plug in your XBox in via ethernet cable in one of the four ports on one end.

So, if the one at Best Buy has the word "easy" on the packaging it's not the right router? The router that your describing. Where else besides ebay would I find that particular router? What stores if any?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he'd need a wireless router and a bridge. 2 wireless routers won't solve the problem.

Maybe I read this thread wrong, but my understanding is goopaluchie has a cable modem downstairs and 360 upstairs. Connect the wireless router downstairs and connect the bridge to the 360. This will work as it's what I'm doing.

You can't link 2 wireless routers together wirelessly. He will need a wireless ethernet bridge like joeboo said.

I'm just going to spend the $100.00 on the Microsoft's wireless network adaptor. And then I will get the Linksys one you guys were talking about in this thread. And then I will connect it downstairs to my computer. I've got high speed internet connection. Is there a disk that comes with the router, so I can download a program to make my computer recognize the router?

                  Re: 360 Router Question

Well, your computer doesn't need to "recognize" the router, as you will just connect an ethernet cable to your computer from the router. You will have no problems, just follow the documentation that comes with the router. And if you have any questions we can help you.

Just connect it into the little Adelphia internet box. On the back of the box there are two openings:1) the "USB" port is empty.

                    2) the heading under this is 10/100 Base-T and there is something in there.

Right, you will connect the 10/100 port (ethernet port) of the Adelphia modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router. Then you will connect your PC to one of the 4 ethernet ports on the router. It will require some configuration on your part, but the instructions that come with it should help.

Actually, you CAN link two WRT54G wireless routers together wirelessly. There are two ways of doing it. The first, under the wireless TAB change the Wireless Mode from "AP" to "Client" or "Client Bridged".

The second way is to use the technology called WDS and it is available to turn on in the latest WRT54G firmwares and third party ones.

Save yourself some dollars and buy two of these routers.

If you really care for the technical specifics, I've found a link that outlines in detail what I just mentioned here...

That seems like a major pain in the *** and a waste of space. I would just get the adapter, but whatever floats your boat.
