    360 through laptop

I am new here so I do not know if this topic has been discussed. I tried hooking up my 360 through my laptop but it does not allow me to. The reason I want to do it is so that I can transfer songs and pictures into my system, and to use the online function (I only have the online that came with the premium xbox, am I allowed to download rosters using this--exactly what can I do through this online). Anyways, can anyone help me. I do not want to dish out 90$ for the wireless thing. Also, the reason I want to do it this way is that the router is in the basement. And I do have wireless internet.

Well, the 360 came with an ethernet cable which means its possible to do this. I want to connect the 360 to my latop and use the laptop's wireless connection as my 360s connection.

ya there is no way that can be done, at least to my knowledge. if you want to get on the internet with your 360, you'll either have to plug into a router, or plug straight into modem itself.

I will point you to microsoft's website here on how to share a PC/Laptop connection
                with your xbox:

If you don't have a router you should also be able to connect them using a cross over cable. It looks like a regular ethernet cable but it's used to network 2 computers.

Connect the 360 to your laptop using a cheap dumb hub or crossover cable(If I am not mistaken this much cheaper hardware is all you should need). Go to Control Panel>Network Connections. Right click the connection you are using and select properties. On the Advanced tab check the box that says something like allow other computers to connect through this network connection.

Then you have to put the 360 on the same LAN. I am sure there are several ways to do this. I just went to the Local Area Network in the same network connections area of my PC right clicked on "Local Are Netowk" and select properties and on the General tab double clicked on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Select Use the following IP address. Give the PC a non-routable IP like 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Then give the 360 an IP that fits on the same subnet (in this case with that mask only the last number is different) like 192.168.0.2, a submet mask of 255.255.255.0 (or the same as the PC LAN) and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 (or whatever the PC LAN IP was).

This worked for me on both the XBOX and 360. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. I have never used an external modem or router and have never had a problem (although I don't use LIVE all that much). Yeah, its a lot clunkier than the router or external modem and in some ways more difficult to manage. And, since you manually set the network settings of the laptop you will need to change than again if you use the laptop on another network. For instance if this is the laptop you use at work make sure you now know to get it working again on your network at work before you go changing your laptop settings. You would need to change the setting back and forth every time you switched networks.

                      Semi-on topic...

Any way to play my 360 through my laptop screen? I'm curious for portability options. If I want to hook it up in a different room or different location, is there any way I could carry my new laptop around and play it through that monitor?

There has to be some way to do that, right?

The VGA adapter would be perfect.

I've not seen many laptops with a Video-IN. You'd need to check your connectors to see if yours will accept a video signal - it probably will output one, but not accept one.

I do have video out capabilities. But don't they make video-in adapters that attach via firewire? If so, would that work? Would I have a lag? Also, do they make any that are HDTV capable? Am I asking too many questions?
