what about your cable box??? if it has a digital jack that would be best. Run it from there to your receiver.

What is the point of a TV having an optical input? They don't even have the speakers for surround sound. That doesn't make any sense.

Nah no digital jack on my cable box. So even if I had some HD channels, is there any way to have Dolby Digital Surround from my 360 AND television without buying two optical cords or swapping the cord back and forth between the two?

You can't get true Digital Surround unless you have 5 speakers.

If you only have one jack on your receiver, they do make splitters which allow you to plug two cables into one jack.......................If you ever upgrade your cable to digital cable and they give you a new box, it will most likely have a digital jack on it. That would be the way to go.

Only reason you would use the one on the tv is if you were picking up HD channels with a regular antenna hooked straight to the TV. But as of now, NO you won't be able to get Dolby Digital while watching TV unless you get a cable box that has the jack on it. If your box is an old one, maybe call them and ask them if they have any boxes with the optical jack that you can swap out.

I have an integrated tuner but I've never used it because I (think) I'll only pick up a couple of local HD channels. I'll probably have to play around with it on Sunday/Monday since I'm going out of town this weekend after work.

You guys are right on with the picture of the set I bought. That 360 wire package has 6 RCA wires on it.

Here is a short summary of why I have: what I have.....

First was the age of my TV, it only had one input/output device for the cable. When I first bought my xbox system I had to purchase the RF switch seperate at the store to play games on the system. I wasn't able to use my stereo for surround sound because I didn't have a VCR. So, I had all that stereo equipment not being used. I was a little upset but my game system worked.

Now jump to this past November, the 360 release date for some. I got lucky because way back in May I was given information about the 360 and that I should put money down towards it. I went back to EB games at the mall the next morning, and got one of the last 3 360's out of 25 this store had for release. I still had my same TV, and I wasn't about to not be able to use my stereo again just like before. So, I scrambled around a week before the game came out and I found a broken VCR from my neighbor. I didn't care that it ate tapes, I was using it for the surround sound AND the RCA cable hook-up for the 360.

From reading different game sites and going to different forums I learned that how I hook up the 360 has alot to do with how the picture looks during gameplay. Gamespot I belive said that using an RF switch like on past systems is like gaming suicide on your TV. From the pictures of comparisons that I saw they were right. They were going down the route for those people who didn't have a HDTV. I didn't have money to buy a TV. So, I decided to go the route of the RCA cale connection. They said it was the best picture hookup going for those without a TV. So, that's what I did.

Here is the place somebody hooked me to information on the Phillips 4 in 1 system. They told me that when I buy this I can throw my broken VCR away. They were right. It's set up like a VCR in the back. You run the TV cable wire into the back of the unit. Then the other wire goes from the unit into your TV. There are 3 places to plug in things. 3 wires plgged in my stereo for surround sound. 3 other wires are my 360 gaming wires that came with the system. It has a switch on it to go from HDTV and standard TV. So, I switched it to standard tv and plugged it in to where it was supposed to go. I had to buy the Phillips box, RCA wires to connect the stereo, longer, thicker coaxial wire with a rating on it. But when I turned on everything it all worked. The 360 and the stereo for surround sound during gameplay and movies. But, now I have to buy optical cables to include my stereo into the 360? Well that is a brief history on how I went down the road I did.

                      The 4 in 1 box...
                      Is it an HD Box?
If you are running your 360 through it, you won't ever get an HD siglan (or picture) if you switch your 360 cable to HD. It won't show up on your TV because it's not a compatible video source for your 4 in 1 box.

Do you have the 360 cables going into the TV Directly?
Is your 360 pushing out an HD picture?

All you would need is an optical cable to run to your reciever to get sorround sound or 5.1 (if you have that kind of setup).

Well, from what I just experienced with all the wires I switched around and all the results that came from doing certin things, I'm guessing that it probally is not. That is dissappointing because I just bought that back in November to hook up my system. And now it's not being used. I had also purchased (RCA-type) wires to connect my stereo to the box. The wires are red-white-yellow. The way it was set up before with my old TV (using the 4 in 1 box) I had the TV cable wire going from my wall into the box. And out from the box I bought another piece of cable and connected that to my TV. Also going into the box were the 3 wires for my stereo and 3 wires from my 360 game system(the 360 switch set to standard tv) When I turned on my system everything was recognized between the box and the 360 and stereo.

Now after I bought the new TV I tired the 3 different wires into the box(blue-green-and whatever the other color was) and I got a piture that was off center, no sound(standard or surround) and the picture wasn't in color. So I switched it back to the wires that were used in the set up before. I only got a picture when I had the 360's switch set to standard TV. But I received no sound. And I noticed that the system didn't recognized the set up like before. What I mean by this is that with the way I had the wires placed on my old set up when I turned on my 360 the TV would switch over to the 360 game screen/dashboard as long as the tv was set on channel 3. Now, it didn't recognize the original set up it wouldn't switch over like before when I turned on my 360. If I had the 360 switch set to standard tv it wouldn't switch over when the system was turned on. And when I switched to HDTV on the swicth box of the 360 it went to the TV station for a few seconds and then back to the dashboard and said it couldn't recognize the HDTV. I had to use the remote and go through the options to sroll down to HD stream 1 as a veiwing option. So I took everyone's advice and ran every wire through the new TV. I took the (these are the 6 wires that came with the 360)blue-green-and whatever and plugged it into the back to the TV under the heading of HD stream1 and switched the 360 box from standard TV to HDTV. I then used my remote and went down through the options and selected the correct TV setting and the 360 kicked on. I was able to use the dashboard to switch between resolotions/picture quality. And this time the 360 recognized it. Next I took the 3 wires from my stereo and plugged these into the back of the TV under the same setting of HD tv stream 1. But when I turned on my 360 with my stereo on(I tired every option on my stereo from vcr-1,vrc-2,video-1)but still no surround sound. This is where I am running into the problem getting my stereo/surrond sound recognized by the new tv. I purchased cables when I bought the Phillips 4 in 1 box and I had surround sound the way I had it hooked up before. I don't see why I need to buy optical cable when I have the cable I had bought already. It worked before. The only difference is that it's not going through the 4 in 1 box. It's going through the TV. I will listen to what you guys have to say. On my system's dashboard the dolby surround sound is recognized. Do I have to set something up in my TV to recognize the stereo?

Does your stereo have an optical input? If so, you will need to buy an optical cable and connect it to the optical ouput on the thing where you switch the TV to HDTV on the xbox cord

Here's what my stereo has for inputs in the back of it, AND what colors the inputs are.

1)Remote Control input (small red hole).......Empty

                            2)T.V. Monitor Out(I don't remeber what color)........Empty

                            3)Video( In...Out....)Don't remeber what color........Empty

                            4)CD Player(Right...Red///////Left...Yellow)Plugged In

                            5)Tape Deck(There are two set's of wires..both are red and yellow)Plugged In

6)Phono Player( Red and White )....Empty

                            7)VCR2 (Don't remeber what color)...Empty

8)VCR1 (This is were I have the 3 red-white-yellow wires plugged into the back of the stereo. And the way I had it set up before, the other 3 wires were going into that Phillips 4 in 1 box. Now that those wires aren't in the box anymore, I've still got them connected to the stereo in their same spot. But instead of going into the box I tried them into my HDTV. Under all the same HD stream1 with no positive results.)

                            9)All speaker inputs(front, rear, center)Right and Left....Powered Sub.

10)An antenna hook up for the radio.

So there is no optical input on the back of my stereo. There is alot of other things. So this is why after buying everything before to hook it up, and now none of it is being used. That's what I mean by waste of money. I'm not going to drop money on another cable, just to get it home and have it not work. Sorry for sounding upset, you guys all tried to help.

sorry man. You should find someone to help you out. You are making in complicated. Your instruction manuals should explain all of this to you.

Do you have a friend or a family member who is good with electronics, that would be your best bet.

If that's the case, then have the red-white cable go from the "in" on the VCR 1 plug to the "AUDIO OUT" of the TV. You'll be able to hear you TV through the stereo then. It won't be in 5.1, but it'll still be nice especially with the sub.

                                what reciever do you have?
                                Like brand and model number

Is there an jack on your reciever that says "Coaxial"???
