Strategy games and RPG games question

I have a question for you guys. This is two questions in one thread. Instead of asking a similar question twice I just combined them into one thread.

How hard are strategy games to get into and be successful at for someone who has not played them before? Same question goes for RPGs?

I am looking into getting into other types of games other then sports games and I know both these types of games can be played for months and months without getting old quickly.

Any advice of input you guys can provide is greatly appreciated. Every time I ask a question as OS the people here never fail to be helpful with there responses.

These games, like any other, can be adjusted to fit your style and skill. You can start off with an easy level, learn the ropes and then crank it up if you wish. If you hace a PC try some demos of RTS games to see how you like it.

Most games have a pretty easy learning curve so you should be fine. I'd say some of the Tactical RPG's can be hard to get into (Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Tactics Ogre, etc) but a game like Warcraft 3 is pretty easy to grasp. And traditional RPG's are also fairly easy to adjust to. And if you want to play a Tactical RPG thats easy to get into a good choice would be Fire Emblem for either Gamecube or GBA. Just don't jump online right away and start competing against vets because you'll likely get killed. Plus gamers tend to be elitist jerks who have no patience for so-called "newbies."

I was thinking about picking up Civilization IV, Rome Total War Gold Edition, and Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. Thnaks for the advice guys.

Great Choices

You may want to add AoE III to the list. There is a demo out there that gives you a pretty good idea as to what the game is all about. Rise of Nations is good too.

I've always been a fan of the Civilization games, you can't go wrong there. I haven't many RPG games outside of Final Fantasies and Paper Mario (if that counts ), but I do enjoy the sim strategy games like Sim City and Roller Coaster Tycoon. It's a little old now, but a easy game to get into is 1692 AD, which is a Sim City type game only you are colonizing small islands.

I never owned a Civ game before, but Civ IV is a blast. It is turn based, meaning you make a move then the computer goes which can be annoying to some. I find it highly addictive and more engrossing than any sports game. The only problem is finding time to play it. I think there is a demo for it out there on Fileplanet, so test it out.

I generally prefer RTS games, but they can be hit and miss. The demos I have played over the years from some of the more popular ones have left me not wanting to buy them. You can't go wrong with any of the RTS from Blizzard (Warcraft 3 being the latest), and I found the last Command and Conquer Genrals to be good too. I suggest trying out the demo before buying, some are overated in my opinion (like Rome Total War).
