    Space fighter game?

What's a good space fighting game that isn't too complicated? I loved Darklight Conflict on Saturn, but haven't been able to find much like it. Starlancer I thought would take it's place, but on the PC the controls are ridiculous. Anything around mirroring Darklight?

You mean like a space combat sim? I've actually been looking for one lately too. From what I've read, it seems like people still regard Freespace 2 (released in 1999) to be the best space combat sim on PC. Some folks are hard at work on a Battlestar Galactica mod for the game which actually looks pretty good considering how old the engine is (see my "Battlestar Galactica game (PC)" thread). I've also heard decent things about a game called Starshatter, but have never seen nor played it.

The last real space combat (non-RTS) game I can remember being released is Freelancer. It seems like a forgotten genre these days though. Remember the good old days with the Wing Commander games for PC? Those were some of the best PC games ever.

Wing Commander is when companies didn't care about making millions of dollars by the bucketload and the industry was still wide open with lots of differnet kinds of games, unlike now.

But Freespace 2 seems to be the one that i hear about most often.

"Different" games still come out, but gamers snub them, and return to WOW, Grand Theft, and Final Fantasy 50 (or whatever its up to now)

I'm always on the lookout for unique games, and some of my friends look at me like I'm on crack at some of the titles I show them. (culdcept anyone?)

As far as space sim-like-but-not-complicated games go... the only ones that come to mind right off have are the Rogue Squadron games. But I haven't played Freespace.

How about Origin's "Privateer" still a classic. Origin once a great company with solid games like Privateer, Wing Commander, and Striker Commander then EA bought and it was over.

Culdcept is a great game that took me awhile to find so I could buy it, but that's not really related.

I think TIE Fighter is not only the greatest space sim game, but the greatest game of all time. It's complicated as far as space sims go, but not too complicated for Star Wars fans. X-Wing Alliance is the newest in the series and isn't terribly outdated graphically. At least, it was released on a CD where TIE Fighter was on floppies.

Freespace 2 would be my 2nd favorite space fighter game.

Freelancer was OKAY...not great. Starlancer was better.

I played all of the Wing Commander games except for that that last free one (Prophecy?) and I never liked them nearly as much as Freespace or TIE Fighter/X-Wing. The graphics were pretty amazing, but the ships felt floaty and didn't seem to give much of a sense of speed.

I have Rogue Leader on my GC because I had heard so many great things about it. All of the games mentioned above are better.
