This is my point, because the Playstation brand is much more important to Sony than XBOX is to Microsoft, Sony cannot afford to make mistakes.

Not what I said slick. Halo 2 logged hours on XBOX Live were ridiculous. By that time the installation base of 360's will be very large and there will not be any kind of shortage demand whatsoever. Combine that with the release of the biggest game (or close) of all-time, and Microsoft will be fine. They will be able to weather the PS3 storm, especially with the forecast of the PS3 price being ridiculous and the looming DVD format war.

People, Don't worry MS and the 360 will be just fine, I would bet money on it. I don't think it's MS that needs to worry...

The only location the DS outsells the PSP is in Japan. Everyother region is pretty much a whitewash and besides $250.00 compared to what $ 129.00

Everyone can't forget in the Fall, it's going to be

Nintendo Revolution and Sony PS3 launching vs. the 1 year jump from the XBOX360. I think that both Nintendo and Sony will hurt a bit since consumers may not be able to purchase both systems due to the possible $500 PS3 cost and the possible $300 Rev cost.

Even though MS was hurting at the beginning imo with a screwed up 360 launch, they may fair better in the end with an already existing user base on next gen.

Oh I was just being stupid. I have no idea about the handheld wars, I honestly don't know which one is doing better.

No matter what MS does the system will sell out, so trying to divert attention away from it is a waste of time.

However they are going to be careful about online play because sony is taking it very seriously this time.

The PS3 will sell out, but there will also be a shortage so consumers will be looking for alternatives. If a consumer can't find a PS3 but can find a nice 360 with Halo 3 (for example) then that is one sale away from Sony. Chances are that a consumer shelling out $400+ for a 360 this holiday season will not buy a PS3 for a bit-much more a few months down the road when they come back in.

Also the Xbox is a big focus for MS because it is the start of the transition to one machine being in the home...and that has been Gates' dream for many years. The 360 is a blend of gaming machine and a media pc. MS does not view the 360 as a "fancy."

One udder thing...to discount Nintendo...which will have a machine at a cheaper price and Zelda to go along with it..is foolish...Nintendo will take some sales away. The Zelda game and the innovative controller will create excitement. There is a good chance that the Revolution might be the second game machine in my home...especially if it's as innovative as they make it out to be.

Re: How do you think MS will counteract the release of the PS3?

IMO Microsoft has had a gameplan implemented and it's worked. In fact it's worked so well that it's had Sony reacting for the last several years. You think for a minute Sony wanted to get the PS3 out the door knowing what it's going to cost them to make it and now has to decide what loses it can eat?

Xbox Live is the defacto standard now Sony is readying their copycat although they say it's not. Sony is being pushed and made to react by Microsoft just like every other company that has played with MS.

Palm, Netscape, Lotus, IBM, etc. While all these are computer tech companies MS has shown they can bring and land their A game in any market they wish to go. MS will not stop till they are top dog in the industry. They have the money and will to make it happen. Resistence is futile.

I don't think anyone is worried, the PS3 was announced with a bunch of numbers and Sony stories. Is it true, we'll only know when the final product is shown. They can talk all they want, release all the figures they want, there is still no running system for anyone to see games on or use the controller.

                        So the sky isn't falling.

This is a good point. If MS does drop their price when the PS3 comes out people might be able to buy an Xbox360 Core system AND a Revolution for the same price of one PS3.
Nintendo hasn't made it a secret that they seem themselves as being a 2nd console in the home.

I think you're bang on about that too. If Sony really was ready to release in the fall of 06 then why did they wait so long to address this after all the speculation and especially after the Meryll Lynch report.
I think Sony wanted to be out earlier but their machine wasn't close to being ready. In reality, if the 360 wasn't out yet I think Sony would be releasing the PS3 in November of 2007.

Since I'm at least 2 years away from buying either system the one thing that will help make my decision will be which HD disc player will become the standard; either HD DVD or Blueray technology.

As long as 360 software continues to improve as it has been, than it will be fine. Even without Halo 3 this year, MS could push Gears of War, Crackdown, and other games as flagship exclusives. I don't forsee a price drop this winter, since it will already have a price and inventory advantage over the PS3. Not to mention that the US/European release of PS3 is not quite set in stone for November, yet. Ken left a little wiggle-room and said they'd launch in all territories "around" that time. Overall, MS is in a better position with the 360 than they were with the original Xbox, so they will be OK.

It worked so well they got outsold by 73 million consoles "last gen", and during their first holiday their new console got outsold by every other console including gamecube. History has also shown that the particular approach they are taking bombed in 1999(I know MS has more stability, that doesn't buy you the lead). You can't win the game industry by throwing cash around, Rare is a shining example of this(for all the money spent on them, 360 owners don't give a rats *** according to NPD). That's not a diss, the 360 owners have some great taste looking at the charts, you make a half *** port/1.5 game they won't touch it.

While Sony copied MS's pricing strategy gold/silver, they got some stuff cooking with the PSP and are more friendly to MMORPGs so it's no one trick pony.

Nope; they won't copy Silver/Gold, infact their silver allows us to play online for free....

Crucially, the basic service will allow users to play games online - a factor which sets it apart from Microsoft's equivalent free service, Xbox Live Silver, which enables community features and content purchases, but doesn't allow users to play multiplayer online games.
