    GDC 2006

    The Game Developers Conference 2006
    March 20-24
    San Jose, California
@ the San Jose Convention Center

Should be some good info to come out of this years GDC.

Phil Harrison will have a keynote, "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box". The rumor is will see atleast one live gameplay demonstration of a PS3 game. My guess is Lair.

Satoru Iwata will have keynote, and we will get some Revolution info out of this.

I'm not sure what Microsoft has planned, although I'm sure they will have something, especially since their list of speakers is big. I'm interested in hearing more about XNA, which will be ready to launch soon.

There will be a bunch more keynotes of interest too.

Lair will be shown for the PS3.

FrankenDragon Flies Again! Creating Playstation 3 Art for Lair

A big part of the industry now knows what it means to create "next-generation content", but many lessons that come with the new workflow are still learned the hard way. In this presentation, Matthias Worch from Factor 5 looks at the highly detailed creatures and environments of Lair, Factor 5's upcoming Playstation 3 title, and how Factor 5 used SOFTIMAGE/XSI v.5.0 to solve various problems that cropped up during development

Microsoft Unveils XNA Framework, Opens Xbox Live Server Platform to Developers and Publishers.

"This community technology preview (CTP) represents the first public opportunity for game developers to get their hands on key components of XNA Studio. Included in the CTP is a pre-release version of XNA Build, which delivers mechanisms for orchestrating, debugging and optimizing the game build pipeline. XNA Build also provides studios with a foundation that helps them easily identify game asset relationships and dependency information to unlock a wealth of benefits, ranging from incremental content builds to assistance in identifying orphaned or unused content. Tools such as XNA Build enable game developers to spend less time building and maintaining their internal tools infrastructure, and more time creating great game experiences."

I will put this in here.

          It's a great video interview.

Xbox 360 Video Interview - Scott Henson

Contents of the 22 minute video interview...
          • Quick introduction to Scott and his role
          • Where XNA stands today since its announcement two years ago
          • XNA Build, the new preview release at GDC, and what it contains
          • Why is the likes of Team Ninja achieving much higher visual standards than many other developers?
          • Using XNA to get results in defining titles like Double Agent
          • The HD Era, Where's it at? There are some teething problems...
          • HD sweet spot is 720p and 1080i... regarding PS3, "1080p is basically impossible"
          • Improving as developers learn more about multithread programming and multicore architectures
          • Polls (like one on Kikizo) suggest low interest in the HD-DVD add-on - what's the plan?
          • Possibility of Bluray Drive or even Combo drive? HD-DVD game content still off radar?
          • Xbox strategy and competitor analysis - is the process really as independent as the execs keep saying?
          • Improving Xbox 360 front-end features - like music player and background downloading - via Live
          • Allowing streaming video media properly without XP Media Center Edition or Vista!
          • "We can continue to add components over time... we'll be ready to adapt to what consumers want"..."We'll continue to evolve it, I promise!"
          • Surpassing Xbox Live expectations - more than half connected, 9 million downloads to date, 85% of consoles have downloaded, 600,000 text messages per day, GamerCards viewed 1m times per day off of Xbox.com...
          • Interoperation of thirdparty middleware with XNA ... developer community support
          • iPod functionality and getting around that unofficial barrier
          • What's hot right now... what to look forward to on Xbox Live Arcade
          • Most talked about Xbox 360 title of 2006 - GOW and Viva Piñata, and "I'm sure there'll be a lot of discussion about Bungie as well..."
          • Why the hell don't we see more of Scott in interviews?!
          • Enjoy this latest video interview, and stay tuned for plenty more where this came from.

                Re: GDC 2006

Sounds like some big things will come out of the Sony and Nintendo conferences.

FiringSquad: Finally, is there anything else you wish to say about GDC 2006?

Jamil Moledin: Yes, I would strongly recommend attending the two platform keynotes from Sony's Phil Harrison and Nintendo's Satoru Iwata. Trust me!
Further proof that Mr. Moledin knows what he is talking about is provided earlier in the article. Mr. Moledin states that himself and his staff must know the contents of the speeches beforehand for many various reasons. Jamil knows what both Sony and Nintendo's keynotes are about, and he is letting us know that there should be some great info involved.

                  Re: GDC 2006

Ironically, I'm so geeked about what I'm reading so far on the XBOX 360. I wonder if that EMotion thing is going to be utilized by a few of the companies in sports and stuff or are they going to use in-house skills to get what they want? I for one am very much impressed by what ya'll dropped on these boards. I think the XNA thing is the start of a beautiful step. I wonder if XNA could somehow be carried over to the PS3 through development? The games will be made on the XBOX 360 correct as the base and then ported over tot he PS3? Oh, 2007 is the year it really gets rolling. I CAN'T WAIT!!

Flawless, if you have the chance, keep us updated with this GDC. What a wonderful world.

Good stuff on the real. I liked what I read. Sony has done a good amount if those things do come to pass. I am so eager to hear more and more. What are the other conventions that they have coming up? Good looking out Flawless!!

wow .. I was all ready to purchase a 360... if the controller and harddrive are confirmed at E3 I can't see why (if you havent made the leap) you'd pick a 360 over a PS3.. unless 2nd gen 360 games are out of this world or the PS3 costs 500....
