Originally posted by luv_mistSame here, but I spent all my flipping money for games already. My reserve is even low. I do want to see how it plays out. Can't rent it just yet cause I owe a little from my movies. Oh, I wonder how many 360 games I'll end up getting by the end of this year. Need to start saving up for two in particular.......Comment

Originally posted by candyman56I know, this month has been expensive as all hell for me. Maybe I might rent this and play it for a week and then just wait for the 360 version. Save $40 for now.
If you are going to get it for the 360 then why buy it for the ps2 and then buy it again for the 360.That is $100 for one game, the 360 isn't going to have anything different than the xbox version except for better graphics.Rent the ps2 version and buy the 360 when it is released.Comment

Re: Godfather PS2- Impressions??????
SPTO, I will have to say that the Godfather is a great game and I would give it more than the 7.9 and 8.1 that both IGN and Gamespot rated this. I would say I would give the game a 8.7 range.
There are many elements to this game that are borrowed from different games, but done a bit better except for one thing that I have seen so far. So far, this game feels like the Grand Theft Auto series with the story driven elements of True Crime. I think that EA did a good job with the Godfather movie license as your main character interacts with pieces of the actual movie. It's really cool as they add you in the behind the scenes part of most of the story.
The game opens up with Connie's Wedding, and at the beginning you are trained by one of the characters from the movie (Luca) that gets killed later on by being strangled with a wire in the movie. This scene is also shown in the game and your character is outside looking in from a window. It's really great how they have taken your character and added him into the movie/game storyline.
The driving is like GTA, except the vehicles don't control as well as the ones in GTA. I almost feel like they ripped out some of the driving out of Burnout. They do explode after running into objects and other cars and gun shots being fired at the cars. There are many different vehicles from the 40's and 50's.
Besides the main storyline missions, there are side missions that you can accomplish. You can give bribes to cops so they stay off of your back for a bit as you cause crimes. You can also Extort owners at shops/businesses for weekly wages. Also you can racketeer in this game which is a nice addition.
I also like the fighting and shooting system in this game. It is well done. Besides just punching or kicking, you can also grab your enemy and beat them up while holding them or even bashing them into walls, through windows, on objects, and throwing them into oncoming traffic. I also think that the shooting is an advanced version of Bond: Everything or Nothing engine.
Executions are done really well, and are borrowed from The Punisher. Even though they are done better on the Punisher, I like them in this game.
The NPC's are brutal on here. It's not like GTA where they run away if you mess with them and only a few fight back, these dudes will fight you and gun you down....some even have backup. Be careful on who you attack on the street or else it could spell a 3 on 1 attack. If you get into a car accident with the wrong person, they will fight you and try to kill you. I hit one car and I had 2 guys trying to gun me down once they got out of the vehicle.
I'm playing this on the PS2, so I can't wait to play the 360 version. The graphics are fine on PS2 and loading times are almost non existant. I can imagine how much nicer this is on the xbox, but EA never really shows the xbox any love when it comes to the games looking better than the PS2.
These impressions are only after 2 hours, when I get more time in tonight I'll add some. I recommend this game. In the end, I tend to like games like True Crime, Driver, and even the Godfather a tad bit than GTA because of the open world environment with a dedicated storyline that keeps the story on an linear path. There has always been way too much to do in GTA that sometimes can be overwhelming.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 03-23-2006, 12:17 PM.Comment

Thanks candy I also like games that are like GTA but more story driven. I've always been intrigued at how EA would implement the Godfather liscence and it seems they've done it in a clever and interesting way. I'll definitely find a way to play the game whether it's through a purchase or rental.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I bought the $40 regular edition since I will be buying the 360 version and I figure that will most likely have most of the extras. I hear the 360 version won't be out until late summer (July/August) or early in the fall. I hope some of the mechanics are fixed by the 360 release as I think the driving needs some work, the buildings need a little more personality as some look kind of plain, and the graphics should be nice and clean.
One thing that I think faulters with The Godfather is that I wish the designers would have totally modeled this game after real life NY in the 40's. You can tell some of the buildings just look horrendous and out of place at times. Again, this is only after 2 hours worth of gameplay.
I feel like GTA opened the doors to the "Open Design Infastructure", but games like True Crime, Driver, The Godfather, and even Oblivion have taken that to the next level by creating a storyline that interacts with the open ended design. One area these games have a positive is in that the NPC's are starting to get smarter with every new game release. GTA faulters at this because I think there is just way too much to do in the games that really causes people to be way too overwhelmed and I feel like the AI and NPC's are just downright stupid at times.
I can't wait to see what Rockstar has for next gen with more power.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 03-23-2006, 01:29 PM.Comment

Re: Godfather PS2- Impressions??????
I think what would have worked well here is that the storyline should have been a "prequel" to the Godfather. They should have used the events from Godfather II where they go through the origin and story of Vito's rise to power. For a videogame, that would have really worked well and it would allow the game player to play the role of one of the main characters. I will always remember Marlon Brando as "The Godfather", Al Pacino played a good Godfather but I thought Brando looked much more ruthless for an old man.
Even in the story now on the game, you create your own character and rise him to power. I think if EA was thinking long term here on this franchise, I would have based this off "Godfather Part II" making it a prequel as the rise to power for Vito.
Then they could have released a sequel to the game based off of the first movie. Just some thoughts.Comment

Re: Godfather PS2- Impressions??????
Another very cool thing in the game that you could do is,
I was taking over the bakery and a woman was inside, I was holding her to the oven trying to come to terms with her when I accidentally threw her in, now, she gave me money before hand but I mistakenly threw her into the oven by mistake.
Now the business says Closed to a death in the family. The bakery closes for one game week maybe two. That's some really cool stuff.
The police are relentless in this game. They give you one helluva challenge on the street because they don't give up on finding you until you've lost them. If they are chasing you via the squad car, do they ram into you, shoot their guns at you, try to push you into traffic and walls. This is why I feel the driving is taken out of Need For Speed: Most Wanted and the collisions are from Burnout series. EA really put a lot of their resources into this game.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 03-23-2006, 06:30 PM.Comment
