PS2 Disc Read Error(DRE)
I dont know if there is a thread on this....but for the last 6months ive been tackling the DRE issue....My PS2 is past warranty, ive cracked it open, done the compressed air cleaning, done the rubbing alcohol on the lens trick, lubed the running rods that the laser sits on with WD-40.....and i still have issues....anyone got other ideas(besides throwing the thing out the window)
or have any past experience with this issue.... any serious replies would be appreciated

I had 2 PS2's die with DRE's. There's not much that I know of to do. Sorry. -

Is it making a grinding sound? I was able to fix mine when it was making that sound.Comment

Re: PS2 Disc Read Error(DRE)
I have a first generation PS2 and it hasn't had much problems. I do get some issues with the purple sided discs tho which isn't a big deal since most games are clear sided these days.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: PS2 Disc Read Error(DRE)
What usually causes the dreaded DRE's is when the Laser pickup no longer moves up or down. That's how the original PS2's could tell whether a Blue Disc, CD or DVD Rom was being used. It automatically adjusts itself depended on the type of disc being used.
When it can't move it doesn't know what type of disc is in the tray so you'll get a disc read error.
To fix it correctly you should send it back to Sony and they will replace the drive. Unforuately you cracked the unit open. Sony had it's hand smacked regarding this issue by the courts and they "SORT OF ADMITTED" there was a problem with the original PS2 design. You could have gotten it repaired for free.
Your other option if you don't plan on buying a PS3 is to get a Slim PS2 as it uses a fixed Laser Pickup lense.Comment

You can buy lasers, buying a laser would be far cheaper then buying a new console.Comment

Re: PS2 Disc Read Error(DRE)
I had the problem and I tried something else. When I opened the console up I took the round, white piece of plastic that makes contact with the top of the disc and physically spins it and then took a very fine grain of sand paper and just lightly roughed the underside of it. This helped it grip the disc better and the error went away. If you try that just be sure to only sand it enough so that you can just feel a difference with your fingertip. Give it a shot if you've got nothing left to try.Comment
