I tend to think that the high price has led to people not buying the movie at all. Hell I was at Wal-Mart today and saw some UMD movies at $25. That's insane when you can buy the full screen version for half price.

What worries me though is the bleed over effect. Will Hollywood now give Sony the same consideration towards Blu Ray seeing how the UMD format is going?

And like I said in the first post I thought UMD sales were doing real good for Sony.

Why buy a movie on UMD and only be able to watch it on the PSP when you can just buy the actual dvd and watch it anywhere (including the psp if you put it on a mem card) ?

EXACTLY...I only have Spiderman 2 because it came with it.

That's exactly why I haven't purchased one. Hell, I can get some DVD's for $15... then I look over, and see the same movie UMD for almost double the price???

Movies should have been at a $9.99 price point since day one. They were incredibly stupid from the get go. If Wal Mart discontinues them, I will probably go buy a bunch if they are clearanced out at nice prices, but I have never even considered paying full retail for one.

I'm surprised...I was just at wal-mart today and they have a whole rack of UMD movies.

I'd personally never buy one anyways as I just can't see myself watching a movie on such a small screen.

I don't know about that cause I read an article from 1up the other day and they show that the PSP is giving Nintendo a run for it's money in the US. In J-ville that's a diferent story cause Ninty is cleaning Sony's clock.

I believe if Wally World does drop UMD "movies" it still won't hurt the PSP cause Sony will just focus on the games for the handheld.

Were you shooting for the world record number of nicknames in a single post?

Like someone else said, some of these things are selling for 20 bucks a pop, minus the special features that regular DVDs have. And with portable DVD players being fairly in-expensive now, their really isn't a need for you to spend 20 bucks on a disc that you can only play with one device.

It wasn't a bad idea by Sony. They really didn't lose much here, only on the movies they released. Otherwise its Hollywood taking the losses. People just don't have a reason to amass a collection of UMD's like they would DVD's. I don't own a PSP, but if I did I'd probably have one UMD movie at the most, just to have one in case I didn't feel like playing a game, but the major studios were releasing everything on UMD as well as DVD.

I don't think UMD's failure has any affect on Blu-Ray. That is two different things. The only things that determine whether Blu-Rays succedes or not are price and visual quality, in that order. I'm kind of hoping it succedes (or HD-DVD succedes) because it does kind of suck to watch a DVD on big expensive HD or Plasma screen only to not have the movie itself in HD. If its affordable I'll gladly switch, but I know it will be pricey out of the gate and I'll want to wait and see if its a success before I committ. If most people take that same approach, then it will fail for sure.

The umd movies are costing higher than dvds. Thats crazy. Im not surprised wal mart is dumping them.

i'll buy them them at 10 bucks at most. and the games as much as an xbox/ps2 game is pretty bad too

Well...trip to NC was for the Div III woman's soccer Final Four for my sister's team, so that wasn;t bad.

Spending almost 30 dollars of a movie I have barely watched...horrible.

With the DUO sticks getting much larger the need for UMD disks are no longer needed. Im sure the studio's will begin to release PSP and IPOD downloads to hit their target market.
