The final price might be high initially, but as with any electronic equipment it will drop as time goes on, and the Blue Ray techonology becomes more main stream.

I can see those getting the PS3 initially to be hardcore fans of the system. And trust me there are a lot of these people.

If people can shell out and buy computer systems that average about say $1000, why can't we see this happening with a system price at half of what it would cost to get a top end computer??

The market is there and Sony will succeed.

First of all there's no way to know if BR will ever truly be mainstream. Why would I spend $600+ on a console that pushes a format, that may or may not win the forthcoming format wars?

That woud be like overspending on a betamax player before you even know if it will remain a supported format in the 80's.

Due to MLB 2007, I was all aboard the PS3 train, but if prices go north of 500-600 dollars, I may have to rethink that strategy. Why pay that kind of money for a machine that outside of their baseball games, hasn't had an exclusive title I am interested in since the Xbox hit the shelves.

A friend of mine in the video game business, told me that Sony decided to support the SDTV and current HDTV without HDMI with their Blue Ray player. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Apparently due to the regulations being pushed on them, anything not on HDMI will have some sort of degraded signal. Not really sure what the deal is, as it's all rumor, and I don't think is set in stone either way at this point

They'll be able to play Video Games on SDTV with no ability to watch movies. I hope they enjoy their mega money purchase.

you can still play/watch DVDs, just not HiDef Blu Ray movies.

so yea... 75% (my pull it out of mu A** number) of PS3 owners won't be using Blu Ray as intended for at least a couple of years.

that's why I like how X360 has done it... DVD drive at launch. It's cost effective and AVAILABLE now, while adding HD-DVD (or Blu-Ray) as a movie player down the line when the formats are actually ready for those that have the equipment/desire to actually take advantage of the technology.

Most of this Blu ray stuff is Sony marketing 101, IMO. Not to mention that Blu Ray may not even win the format war.

Any company trying to bypass copywrite protection methods will lose in court.
This kind of case would be easy for the AACS to defeat, as well as movie studios, etc.

I'm glad now that Microsoft stuck with the Dual Layer DVD instead of HD-DVD.
They'd be facing a crap load of scrutiny from messge boards. Since this is Sony though, to many people in the gaming industry are still very Pro-Sony "they can do no wrong! destory MS."
It's sad. I don't want too see Sony or MS fail.

Is there a Blu-Ray player even on the market yet? Does the general public have any idea what Blu-Ray is? I'm inclined to say no, cuz even I still don't have much of a clue about exactly what's so great about Blu-Ray, much less do I know exactly what it is.

Just going by this article, it seems that Sony is in for quite an uphill battle with their PS3. If it really does cost $500+, I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole. There are other gaming options out there that suit my personal interests just as well that will be much cheaper.

the general public doesn't... they hear blu ray and 50 gb's of space and what not and immediately think that all games will utilize all that space @ the PS3 Launch. At least thas what i get from casual gaming fans... most don't know about the AACS crap that's go'n on, and needing HDMI to run those blu ray or hd dvd movies, etc.

To be fair there is another story that balances out what you see here. I'm not saying who is right, but both reports need to be considered before speculative conclusions about pricing is drawn.

If it's that price, then we're good to go. But if they want to use a 600+ dollar price and justify that price with the fact it's a BR player, that's where I have the problem. At least until the format war is settled. This has the potential to be BetaMax all over again. Sony has continually tried to push their propriatary formats on the world, with little success. This appears to be yet another attempt.

nope, it's definately not a good move... for my pockets at least. But sony's playstation fanbase and following is so strong that anything they do will seem like a good move (to them). Just go peep the sony forums.

Having the extreme diehards buy it off the shelves, is one thing. But it's the general consumer, the non-diehards that they need to sell this device on. At over $600 that's going to be a tough sell BR or no BR. Especially when 9 out of 10 "regular" consumers out there are looking for it to be a video gaming console first and foremost, with the Xbox360 and the new Nintendo Console coming in at much lower price points. The extreme Die hard, PS, early adopter types aren't enough to make this a good move for Sony.

Now, if BR becomes an industry standard, and for whatever reason, BR players are going for $1000, then I can see the selling point. But until that time, pricing a gaming console at $600+ dollars will make it very tough to be competitive.

Lots of new info has come out since then.
This is why the debate is starting to get interesting.
Back in June there was no "delay" on the spring 2005 launch. There wasn't much of a debate about the HDMI and Blue Ray requirements.... etc. There wasn't the REQUIRED hard drive annouced.

Sadly this is going to be a $600 machine.

Blu-Ray, is an excellent technology which will really allow developers to make bigger games. But, how many developers are going to take advantage of this format is the question? Like Rod said, almost all multi platform games are being made (EA, 2KSports, etc.) on the 360 and then being ported over to the PS3.

Yes, companies like Square and Sony will take advantage of the blu ray. I just can't see this system being a success at $600+?

How do you know the games are being ported to the ps3?? I dont think you can speak on that just yet as the ps3 isnt even out. Its not that simple my friend.
