    Oblivion Breaks Sales Records

Bethesda Softworks announced that its hit title, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has achieved record sales, reflecting huge market demand for the title. Over 1.7 million units of Oblivion for the PC and Xbox 360 have been shipped since the launch of the game.

In North America, Oblivion has become the fastest selling game released on the Xbox 360. The NPD Group Inc reports Oblivion PC as the best selling PC game, while the Oblivion Collectors Edition is ranked number 2. NPD reports that Oblivion represented approximately 13% of all PC game sales in the first week of its release, more than four times the sales volume of the next best selling title. (The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the highly-regarded predecessor to Oblivion, remains one of the top 25 best selling PC games nearly four years after its release, according to NPD). European results have been similarly strong with Oblivion quickly becoming ranked the number one selling title in the UK, Germany and France.

Reaction around the world has been equally laudatory. Oblivion has been featured on more than 30 magazine covers in the US, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Benelux, and other countries.

Oblivion is currently the #1 ranked Xbox 360 game

Because you can go anywhere and do anything. It's very open ended ala GTA, people love the ability to play games the way they want instead of just having to go from point A to point B and etc etc, do things how the game developers require you to do them. This game is all about freedom to play how you want!

The Soundtrack in itself is amazing! The visuals are off the charts, the game is massive and like others have said it's opened ended.

An amazing game and truly deserving "Game of The Year", and this is from a guy who hates RPG's.

                    I am the anti-RGPer.
I hate turned based combat games, including military ones.
My diet is 80% sports and 20% action games.

As for as this game goes...
It truly is like GTA, but in the medevil times. It's different and cool.

Trying to say that you only kill rats and cast spells, etc.. That's very unfair and slightly closed minded. Look at how many people on this board aren't RPGers that have tried it and liked it... Go look at the impressions thread or even the discussions thread.

You kill rats for the first 30mins. After that it's wide open, from towns people too wildlife (like wolves, etc). Kill what ever. Steal what ever. Be what ever you want your character too be.

This game is appealing too more than just the RPG crowds.... a lot of RPGers don't like real time combat. A lot of us guys like real time fighting. That's why there's quite a few GTA folks jumping on board too a nerd/geeks game.

Seriously, don't knock it or think it's for the D&D kids like Napolean Dynamite.
This is for even the anti-RPGers. It's a HIGH QUALITY game that should at least be rented before scoffed at.

But I can see your point of view...
Just don't knock the actual "men" of this group who are liking this geeks paradise.

I second that Zeke. This game offers open ended gameplay like no other in the medieval times. That is what I enjoy about this. If I could add a few things and omit a few others it would make this game even better for me.

The way I see it is that gamers are sick of the linear, hold your hand type games where you get 1 objective, complete with arrow guiding the way and a linear path to get there. Where designers draw up doors that can never be opened, backgrounds that can never be reached and countless clones of enemies who all dress the same, weild the same weapons and are meant to be dumb as a box of rocks.

We've reached a point in gaming where all those limitations should be irraticated and gameplay could/should be open ended, huge with tons of objectives, variations and depth. Oblivion is here to set that standard. GTA is another that set that standard. If you have yet to realize the potential of an immersive world, you dont know what you're missing.

Well.... I'm not much of a fan of GTA. It gets boring FAST. It has no depth in plot, the characters aren't that great, the game drags on forever. This is generally true for nonlinear games.

These games have their place, but I don't think game companies should always strive for open-endedness in all games. Some games should be open-ended, some games shouldn't. It just depends on the story that is being told in the game.

That said, I'm looking forward to Oblivion, as I like RPG's a lot. It's just too bad I don't have the system to play it yet.

i didn't mean to strike any nerves with my comments, but rpg's have never appealed to me. i gave morrowind a chance and got bored after creating my character, so i probably put 45 minutes into it. everyone hyped up knights of the old republic so i bought that and literally fell asleep the four times that i tried to play it. both of these experiences have left a bad taste in my mouth. as far as it being open ended, grand theft auto has somewhat soured me on that as well. i got sick and tired of traveling forever to get to where i had to go (although i didn't mind it in GUN because you didn't have to go that far). all that being said, i'm going to rent it eventually just because everybody and their daddy seems to be playing it. i'm not anticipating that i'll like it, but we'll see.

                              thank god for gamefly.
