Game Tester
I'm so curious to know if there are game testing for consoles that I can get into for some of these companies with so many bugs. Anyone know where to point me in the right direction? I'm in Illinois so that kind of kills a lot of my flow. I got something in the e-mailbox a few hours ago but I'm sure it's bogus. They took paypal but I'm honestly not going to give my money like that without knowing if they're legit enough. If anyone knows info, go ahead and holler at me please. Heck, if 2K or EA has something, that sure would be sweet.Tags: None -
Re: Game Tester
The problem with game testers is that they're given a test plan to follow. Many people think they sit around playing games and looking for bugs, but that's not the case. Even when they do find issues with the game, if the guys in upper management don't think it's worth fixing, it's not going to get fixed.
I looked at game testing jobs when I graduated from college with a Computer Science degree. From what I saw back then, they didn't pay well either. I saw jobs at EA for $8-$10 an hour. It wasn't even close to what I was looking for. I don't know if that's still the case.
As far as your email - don't do it. Why would they want your money? Doesn't seem right.Comment

True dat. They're usually given a list of things to look for an a given scenario and they have to do it over and over and over again throughout their shift. Plus the pay sucks. I just recently saw a company paying only 7.25 or something.http://neverfollow.biz (Independent Music Group)Comment

Re: Game Tester
There should be some type of game tester assurance or something. I guess it's not all it's cracked up to be. This email that was sent was where they sent you games to your house with a survey. You play it different ways and then give your thoughts about it and they'll send you a check or something. Didn't check it for too long cause I figured it was iffy. I think it was a company that did the game testing where it came directly to your house or something like that.
I don't understand what's up with game companies nowadays where games leave the lines bug and glitched up. I was so happy when I heard they had WM21 for XBOX only to find out that the A.I. was the dumbest piece of crap. Then, neither M$ nor the developer/publisher of the game took credit for allowing the game to be shipped crappy. There needs to be some type of quality type of company that hires people for a reasonable amount of money to test their games.....AT HOME!! I'm sure as heck not trying to relocate either cause it honestly makes no sense to. I'm already set in a career. Want to do it as a side job to make extra cash as well as give back to the industry I love. Guess the best things in life cost either too much or just don't work out well together.......Comment

Re: Game Tester
Not really thats just normal beta testing; I've been involved with almost every Sony beta test... They're usually just stress test for the severs (and to look for other minor bugs) before the games ships.Originally posted by burnwoodI get some of Sony's first party games to test and evaluate before they launch through the Playstation Underground GAP.
I don't know if this qualifies as the typical full-time tester though.Comment

Re: Game Tester
not to mention since you play the game so much, you often beat it well before it ships or even goes gold. I remember seeing a documentary on Commander and Conquer: Red Alert, and they interviewed several testers. The majority of them said they loved their jobs, but they had beaten the game in a mere days after beginning it and that after so long the game had lost its appeal and that they wouldn't even play it once it became available to the public. So I mean, you don't want to become jaded from games that you know you will want to play over and over again. Just a thought.Lux y VeritasComment

Re: Game Tester
If it was a sports game and I could seriously catch some bugs, I'd be satisfied. I could still get into a basketball game regardless if it's bugged or not. It's just the sport I grew up on tha tI stuck to. Any other one I'd probably be a decent game tester. I kind of wish I was living in California or something cause then I'd have quick access to these jobs. It's so horrible being in the Midwest it seems. Here's to hoping that in the future, they expand their testing field.

Re: Game Tester
Back when I was in College, my cousin asked me if I wanted to work in QA for EA. I was kind of interested until I found out they didn't accept people that are still in school. You had to be available every day of the week and all hours.
IIRC the pay was around $10/hr. You usually have to work overtime before a game is about to go Gold. It may seem easy but I was told it can be stressful.
The pay was awful but there were some benefits. You had the option of buying new games for $20 and you had access to the EA gym.
The chances of moving up the food chain if you're starting out in QA is slim to none.
2k pays $10/hr.

With the pay barely above minimum wage no wonder so many bugs get through....... QA people probably don't care. LOLComment

As much as it would be fun to play games for a living, I wouldn't do it. Even if that pay rate was a little higher.
It would ruin my enjoyment of not just the games I would test, but games in general. And I just wouldn't be willing to give that up.
The pay rate is interesting though. I was on holiday in Japan and noticed an ad for a full time game tester. We worked it out to be around $18/hr US, so that's a big difference. They didn't give a specific company name but it was a place that handled the employment of testers and distributed them to various gaming dev teams apparantly.Comment
