    Xbox 360 getting new CPU

Chartered Semiconductor announces new deal to make smaller 65mm-process chip for Microsoft's next-gen console.

Get ready to throw away your Intercooler 360

"Chartered Semiconductor announces new deal to make smaller 65mm-process chip for Microsoft's next-gen console".

One of the most common consumer complaints about the next-gen console is that its graphics capability requires a central processing unit which needs to be cooled by a constantly running, less-than-stealthy ventilation system. In other words, its fan is loud.

Some disgruntled consumers have even compared the 360's fan to a Blackhawk helicopter. Those same consumers will welcome today's news that the Xbox 360 is getting a new CPU which runs at lower temperature. Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced it will begin making the Xbox 360's CPU using a using 65-nanometer (nm) Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) semiconductor technology. Currently, the Singapore-based hardware manufacturer company makes 90nm Xbox 360 CPUs under an agreement with IBM, designer of the CPU. The first Xbox 360s with the new CPU will go on sale in 2007.

Let me first admit that I am technically challenged !!! I wonder if this is something that can be swapped out for all people that currently own 360's ??

Your statement about "throwing away the 360 Intercoolers" has me wondering

    Any idea ???

No it's installed in the factory during manufacturing. Only future 360's will get these CPU's. The benefit for going to a smaller CPU die cast are:

          1) Lower Temperatures
          2) Lower Power Consumption
          3) Higher yields
          * This benefits MS the most cause they'll get more CPU's for the same price. If true then what Flaw speculated re: MS at E3 might have some thruth i.e. a 360 price drop.

As far as the Intercooler 360. It's a addon device sold by Nyko to help cool down the 360.

I'm 99% positive there will be atleast a $50 price drop the 360 by the time PS3 comes out. Microsoft would be stupid not to.

Uhh no,those same consumers will be furious it wasn't done to begin with because they're not going to be buying another 360 to get it and still be stuck with the old ones.

That would be wrong "cause the technology wasn't there" at launch. It's no different with the original PS2 and it's share of problems that were addressed later on. It's been said before the 'Hard Core Fans" know this up front because we've seen it before.

I bought a PS2 at launch and I went through a few systems till I got a good one. The same with MS and the 360. We all pretty much knew ahead of time we were going to be the guinea pigs.

It happened with the PS2, now with the 360 and the PS3 when it arrives. Isn't technology grand?

I'm not furious. It's just part of the business. You keep upgrading your product. No reason to be furious.

Re: Xbox 360 getting new CPU

That's the beauty of a 2 year MS warranty... next year, around summer or so, if my Xbox starts acting up, I send it in, and most likely get a newer unit back, with the new CPU in it. They win (get my money in the form of a warranty), I win (get a 360 with the newer technology). If I happen to get an old unit, then I don't really care, it'll at least be newer than what I have now.

So this doesn't make me mad. I'm actually quite happy MS is looking into ways to make this machine better.

                        hmmm.

on xbox, people can install a heatsink to the actual cpu chipset nvidia on the motherboard. that made my xbox run alot better.. i also installed a fan mod to upgrade the fans speed a few V.

is this possible with opening up a 360?

There are some who have opened their 360 and installed a water cooling system. Once a 360 is opened 'it voids the warranty'. It's far better for those who have heat issues to buy The Nyko Intercooler 360. It's already been reviewed at Team Xbox and they showed it does dropped the internal temps on the system.

It easily attaches to the outside of the unit. When the new CPU's start showing up next year the Intercooler 360 will be a thing of the past.

Yeah, it's physically possible to install a heatsink, etc. into a 360, but like Rodster said, it'll void your warranty. It's best not to do that.
