    Gamefly and PS2 Games

A few quick questions for all you hardcore gamers:

    1) With the price of the PS2 dropping, I'm thinking it might be time to catch up on all the PS exclusives I've missed out on over the years (I've never owned or played PS1 or PS2). I'm thinking of picking up either a new PS2 from Best Buy ($129.99) or a refurbished system from Gamestop or EB ($109.99). Is there anything I need to buy along with the system (for instance, are those memory cards or anything else not included in the main package required)?

    2) Of course, with the huge influx of worthwhile games to play, I don't want to have to go out and purchase all of them. So I'm thinking it's probably time to hop on the Gamefly bandwagon as well. Between the 1-game at a time and 2-game at a time package, which one do you current Gamefly members use?

    3) So yeah....which PS2 games should be among the first to go in my queue? I know that most recently I've missed out on God of War and Resident Evil 4. After that, I'm kind of clueless at to any classics I may have missed since I never paid much attention to PS games before. By the way, I'm into all kinds of games - action, adventure, sports, FPS, etc. - except for hardcore RPGs (so the whole Final Fantasy thing isn't really up my alley).

I use Redoctane online rentals. I only have the 1 game out a time but that is perfectly fine for me. I only pay $9.95.

Well, I use the 3-game rental system, and man, it's great. Go for Gamefly.

Weird, I don't even see a 3-game at a time plan at gamefly.com. They only show a 1-game out for $14.95 a month and a 2-game out for $21.95 a month, which is pretty steep for me. I guess I'll try the 2-game system to start and see how that goes.

So.....ps2 game recommendations, anybody? Also, as I mentioned, I'm just planning on getting the $129.99 Ps2 from Best Buy. I think that the system they're selling is the new "slim" PS2 - any reason that's bad? Also, do you guys recommend getting best buys personal service plan with that?

Well, it's only for people that have been signed up for a while.

If you like wrestling, check out WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2006, and MLB 06: The Show is a good game too.

The service plan is cheap, which I think it's 2 years for $20-25. It's worth it because if something happens to the PS2 they will give you credit of $130 to buy another one or you can put it towards a PS3 if you are going to get one.

Go out and buy Guitar Hero. Don't even bother renting you'll want to buy it after playing.

              Rent Killer 7 and Pyschonauts.

Yeah, I've heard a lot about Guitar Hero (mostly along the same lines of what you've said) but I'm still skeptical. Is there any point to buying it without the "guitar controller," or does that kind of "make the game?"

                Thanks for the tips.

Yes buy it with the guitar controller. It's actually kind of bad with the regular controller. Rent if your skeptical, can still buy it there if you want to keep it right?

Yes, that's true, but from what I gather Gamefly won't send you the copy with the guitar controller. Probably because it costs a lot more to ship. You can only get the regular copy from them.

Hey, here's something I totally forgot about. Do I need to purchase any special cables or anything else to connect the PS2 to my HDTV? I have a 37" Sharp Aquos widescreen HDTV.

Are more recent PS2 games even capable of being played in widescreen or in HD?

Component cables are a must. A lot of PS2 games are in widescreen, and a lot are in 480p. But only one is in actual HD, Gran Turismo 4 was in 1080i.

Thanks EG. And I assume that component cables are not included when you buy a PS2 slim? Between the 8MB Memory Card, the component cables, and the Best Buy service plan, this is starting to look like a lot less of a great deal.

Would I be wrong to assume that you at least get a single controller when you buy the PS2 slim?

You can get the Mad Catz component cables for 10 bucks, so it's not too bad. One controller does come with the slim though. You are correct there. I would personally skip the service plan though, I never buy them on any product under $150. Just seems like a waste of money to me. On top of that, I'm pretty sure Sony extended the service plan through Sony for 1 year instead of 90 days, so you got a year through the company anyway.

                              Re: Gamefly and PS2 Games

Can anyone who has a PS2 hooked up to their HDTV help me out? I ended up getting the PS2 slim and God of War, but I have two minor problems.

                              1) So I got the Sony brand component cables to hook the PS2 to my Sharp Aquos LC-37D4U HDTV (which is a widescreen HDTV). The PS2 manual says:

PS2 is "compatible for use with component video inputs (Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr) but cannot be used with inputs in HDTV format (Y Pb Pr)."

Of course, my HDTV has the latter. I attached the Sony component cable to my HDTV anyway, turned on the PS2, and it seemed to be working. So I don't know what gives. However, in configuring the PS2 I experimented with the setting that allows you to choose between "4:3", "Full", and "16:9". Obviously I don't want 4:3, but I didn't know which of the other two I'd want, so I tried both with God of War. With both, I seem to be left with the game taking up almost all of the screen, but leaving a vertical black bar of about an inch or two on the left side of the screen (the game uses the entire right side of the screen, which is weird). And I did go into the God of War options and enable both progressive scan and widescreen. Anyone know what's going on, or experienced this before??

                              2) Upon trying to install the PS2, I found out that I've run out of component input slots. My Digital cable box uses one, and the 360 was using the other (I unplugged the 360 to try out the PS2). Anyway, I obviously need to do something about this. Am I just dreaming, or are there some splitting mechanisms I can buy to get both the PS2 and the 360 using the same component input??
