Re: PS3 Interface (From E3)

Now Sony should implement a way to use an IM function with the games and when surfing the web, they could make the PS3 truly a "everything" machine.Comment

Re: PS3 Interface (From E3)
Just like PS2, you will use your on IP address as you do right now. So if you're with sbc/dsl that's who you'll go online with. These XBOX cops will not let any PS3 good news go unchallenged.Comment

All I do is internet surf on my PSP and I never got a virus. *shrugs*
Also you could use a USB keyboard on PS2, I'd assume it'd work for PS3 also. I don't know though, I haven't really looked at exactly what ports PS3 hasXbox 360 GamertagRAW 910

Hell, I asked about the HDD where a sony fan suggested that it uses a serial ATA Drive that's easily replaceable. My question was, if the HDD is internal, would upgrading your HDD void your warranty with Sony if you open it up?
Not everyone that owns a 360 tries to bash sony. So have legitimate questions."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell

Re: PS3 Interface (From E3)
It is going to be extremely risky surfing the internet without virus protection which is unlikely for the PS3. I doubt the PS3 is even capable of running Symantec's Norton Anti Virus for example. This is one reason why a closed network is better.Comment

Re: PS3 Interface (From E3)
If you only go to sites you know are clean and youre not running Internet Explorer (which I'm assuming will be nearly impossible) you should be able to avoid a virus. If the threat of a virus is great enough that consumers demand one I'm sure someone will create anti-virus software to be loaded onto the HDD.
Some stuff about the PS3 is looking good. It's like a hot girlfriend who's really annoying. Everything looks good, but theres that something thats hard to ignore that pisses you off.Last edited by Misfit; 05-15-2006, 12:42 PM.Comment

In any case, a virus would be easy to get on anything that's connected directly to the internet with no protection. I can only assume Sony would take measures to prevent this, but who knows?Comment

Re: PS3 Interface (From E3)
I think this virus thing on a PS3 maybe much to do about nothing. Everyone needs to factor in what kind of OS a system is running, how susceptible that OS is to be hacked.
Most viruses are written for MS because (a) people hate them or (b) the OS says "Welcome" to a hacker. Mac OSX which I use only for internet purposes is a much more secure OS than say WinXP.
The OS that's written for the Xbox360 i've read is a stripped down version of WinXP and i've read and maybe Flaw can look this up weighs in at about 1meg. It's not as easy to hack something that small when the purpose of the system is very limited i.e. games and multiplayer.
As far as the PS3 goes what OS will it be running? Will it be Linux or a special version of it? Can viruses easily be written for that OS. What level of intrusion or damage can result from that virus.
I'm sure Sony has taken all of this into account with the OS they'll use on the PS3. I just don't see the level of viruses or intrusion on a console that you get from a PC.
Besides on XBL if you lost a HDD, you can recover everything you downloaded from MS. I see Sony doing the same in a worst case scenario.
The bottom line I feel everyone is worrying a little too much about something that's really hard to do.Comment
