Oblivion: Elder Scrolls IV- assistance needed

Hi all, I know there a lot of OSers who have Oblivion and are pretty good at it.
Personally, i really like the game but my only problem is that i get my *** handed to me everytime. I have the difficulty at default and i am about lvl 18.

I am currently trying to close my first oblivion gate but i just get destroyed in the level (Oblivion castle in Kvatch) by those demon warriors. I can handle one at a time but anymore and i am toast. Am i doing something wrong or do i just suck at the game?

I think i have ok equipment, mithril armor and enchanted axe of dissolution and storm bow. Unfortunately neither weapon is charged since i can't afford to have a mage recharge it for me and i am not advanced enough in magic for soul entrapment.

I really enjoy playing this game but it sucks that after every two enemies i have to wait for like 3 minutes just to heal myself with my magic. Any tips from the expert oblivion players to help me with this game?

    Thanks a lot

It may not feel right in terms of the story and wanting to kill every enemy, but it's actually extremely easy to simply run by all enemies in the gates. Because all you're pretty much doing is getting to the end of the gate and (without spoiling it for you...) shutting it down. Run, jump and heal

I may be wrong but I believe the enemies level up with you. Since your a high level (at least for the 1st gate) the enemies are also high, thus make it difficult to kill. I'm just speculating though I don't know for sure. I closed my first Oblivion Gate early in the game (Level 1) and didn't have much trouble with my Warrior.

i had that problem with that Oblivion gate too...i used the Run, Jump, Heal approach and it got me through...you don't really miss much, kinda sucks, but i think something's goofy with how that one levels up

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

So from what i can gather the only way for your character to better than the enemies you face is to have really good equpiment and mastery of your major skills?

If thats the truth, i think it sucks. I prefer being able to dominate the casual/abundant enemy and having to struggle against boss type enemies (like how most RPG's are). I shouldn't have to struggle and repeadetly die against a fricking mountain lion or bear like i have in this game.

Put the slider all the way down for the normal fights and back up for bosses. That'll give you what you want.

A lot of it depends on what type of character you are, and what your attributes are. I finished the first gate at level 20... I had Umbra and Umbra's armor, so it wasn't that tough for me to do. I prefer a Long sword of some sort, and a good shield... its a quick attack, and block scheme. I could never use the Blunt weapons like axes, etc. If you're having trouble with Blunt, I'd try a long sword/sheild combo... and Mithril is okay armor, but it's light armor.
