    just re-started my dreamcast up

i have the adapter to connect the dreamcast to a pc monitor and an extra monitor in my office. so i hooked them back up and remembered what made the dreamcast so good.

i started first with a copy of tony hawk which i never liked on the ps1 or 2 but the dreamcast controller is perfect for it. i started up a couple other games like virtua tennis and a few driving games.

virtua tennis is one of the best games i ever played. i forgot how fun it is. i lost a lot of my skills from before so it is like an entirely new game.

the dreamcast controller is so much better for driving games than the ps2 controller. with the triggers you can really drive much better. i had to buy a wheel for the ps2 and it has to be stored and set up. this is sooooo much better for quick play.

what is so cool about using it at the office is the games are all short. i can play them during down times and get a gaming fix in. then i am back to work refreshed. the adapter makes the games look great. you see so much more detail with virtua tennis courts, for instance.

i think some newer games are getting so complicated that these simpler games i am playing are just mindless fun. if you have on old dreamcast and can get your hands on the adapter, i highly recommend it.

Stumbled across this while searching for something else; but yea I have been playing my DC on and off for about 6 months now. I see why it is arguably my favorite system of all time
    Concrete evidence/videos please

Re: just re-started my dreamcast up

Maybe you'd be so kind as to refresh my memory...

I remember the Dreamcast controller being pretty good, especially with the triggers and VMU, but I don't ever recall it being the most comfortable in your hands, pressure-sensitive face buttons, or a full 360 directional thumb stick. The first one is opinion of course, but can you again enlighten me on the other two? I'm really just not remembering. Perhaps my mind is getting fuzzy with the Gamecube controller or something.

I mean don't get me wrong... all controllers are pressure-sensitive (including this one) in that when you press harder, games have the ability to recognize such input. But I feel like this was the controller where, when you press down even a little bit, it sort of "clicks" all the way down (or it doesn't go down at all) instead of making a smooth path down, where it's more or less in your control how far down it goes.

As for the left thumb stick, I just don't remember. Was it a smooth circle all the way around, or were there predesignated "directions" so to speak?

Oh, and did the controller vibrate? I can't remember.

Thanks in advance for letting me know.

If you can, get your hands on a game called "Toy Commander"...I'm pretty sure thats it. It's a ton of mini games revolving around old time war/action toys. Like sinking a sub with a plane, shooting toy soldiers barricaded behing blocks. Think of "Toy Story" but an action videogame.

There was a vibrating accessory. I loved the DC controller, felt perfect, the VMU was an awesome idea especially for NFL2K.

I don't remember any clicking with the buttons, it was smooth, and I played a ton of Metropolis Street Racer.

There really isn't anything much better then firing up Marvel vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the DC. Probably my favorite 3 fighters all on a gorgeous little system.

I need to get a VGA cable already.

Nothing like some good ol Power Stone fighting action! I loved the Dreamcast and can't figure out why others didn't like it. It had a huge library of games and excellent graphics at the time.

The xbox controller is pretty much a bigger and less round copy of the Dreamcast controller. The left thumbstick is the same as the xbox controller but it didn't vibrate without a separate pack.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Great game. I also loved Re-Volt, the RC car racer. Dreamcast was a GREAT system.

I rebought one off Ebay a month or so ago because I felt bad about ever getting rid of it. System(I have a VGA adaptor I just stored away also) , 2 controllers, 2 VMU's and 13 games for 50.00.
I hooked it up long enough to make sure it worked and it worked just fine. Now I just have to get some of the other games I liked.

yeah, that's why it's good the games are cheap on ebay. You could also burn cdr's of games that never came out. Propellar Arena is a nice fun multiplayer game that never was released, and there's also an unreleased port of half life.

I know exactly what you are referring to...

The PS2 has pressure sensitive face buttons. I believe the PS3 DOESN'T have pressure sensitive face buttons. Is this true?

The coolest thing about the Dreamcast for me was the VMU. At the time I was sure that every future gaming console would have something like the VMU. The VMU was great in NFL 2K1 because you could call plays without having to look at the screen. You can scroll through your plays on your VMU and surprise your opponent.

If you think about it, that is more "next-gen" than anything seen on the PS3 or Xbox 360. Those are graphical powerhouses, but that is all they are. There is nothing next gen about running consistently 30 FPS on the PS3. The dreamcast was a gaming console. It was limited graphically, but it forced programmers to find ways to make sure games like NFL 2K1 looked great and ran smooth, and, at the same time, had a fully functional VMU. In many ways, programmers and designers have gotten lazy and now simply put al their focus on high graphics textures they have forgotten what has made games so fun over the years. The VMU should be applied to all consoles that take sports multiplayer gaming seriously. It doesn't even have to be connected to the controller. It could be plugged into a separate input on the console. The only next-gen console I feel comfortable with is the Wii, because it has a sleek design, a new idea, and has allowed smaller independent developers to make and sell games for the console without having to satisfy Microsoft or Sony.

Long live the Dreamcast. Long live the PS2. Long live the Xbox1. (even though Microsoft has stopped making games for it, even tough it is a more reliable system than the Xbox360 !)
