PS3 not #1 in Japan?

I thought this was interesting and somewhat surprising to me. Here are some numbers from a few articles, including the one above:

Before the 360 was released, Japanese gamers felt this way:

Want to buy:
PS3 - 63.2%
Wii - 36%
360 - 23.9%

After E3, the numbers look like this:

Greatest Interest:
Wii - 68.3%
PS3 - 21%
360 - 7.2%
DS - 3.0%

Is the PS3 launch price too high?
Yes - 88.4%
No - 10.9%
Too low - 0.7%

I'm not surprised how little interest the 360 is getting in Japan. Japanese gamers seem to not have any interest in the American product and MS was pretty naive to think they could sell over there IMO.

However, I am surprised at the numbers the Wii is putting up. Those are some pretty overwhelming numbers in support of the Wii over the PS3 after it showed at E3.

Guys the PS3 is bigger than the xbox 360, which is a huge " no thanks" for japanese gamers..They want something sleek and small..hense why they want the Wii so much in that poll.

The surprising thing to me is that Japanese gamers should've known the dimensions of the system before E3. I know Japanese gamers like small, non-bulky machines and the Wii is just that. I think the price point is the main concern as 88.4% interviewed felt it was priced too high.

In any case, if these numbers hold true throughout (I'm sure the current sample size isn't very large), then Sony could be in some trouble.

It's just very odd to see a drastic flip of interest such as what's being shown (Wii gains approx. 30% and PS3 drops approx 40%).

I've lived in Japan and have a lot of friends there- and from my own experiences (obviously can't be applied to all situations), most of the gamers there, especially the ones in the 23-35 age range, don't have a lot of extra cash saved up.

As you know, the cost of living is huge there...

The poll consisted of 294 responses which means it's pretty much worthless.

In no way do 294 people (assuming people didn't vote more than once) represent the millions of gamers that are currently in Japan.

But it is possible for 294 people to have representatives from different demographics, so it isn't all moot.

The numbers likely have alot of the "what have you done for me lately" influence in them as well. The Wii has gotten alot of good press, while the PS3 has been the opposite.

I disagree. I am now convinced the U.S. is tied and will soon pass Japan as the number one market.

I don't know what Sony is thinking but it seems like they have upset the two major markets. I said it in the other thread that discussed this: In Japan I believe innovation is king and the Wii will do very well over there. Here (for the mass market) graphics and production values are king and the 360 will odminate since it will take along time for the expensive PS3 to be vastly superior in this category. The shame of it is I would like to play a few of those Sony exclusives, but am not willing to spend that much money on an additional toy.

its crazy. i have zero interest in the wii. its not appealing to me. I dont know what the fuss is all about. people love the 360 grahics but seem to give the wii a pass because of its controller/ i guess you pay for graphics these days

The PS3 will be #1 in Japan as soon as all the weird JRPG's start showing up. Nintendo's console will do better than the GC but still won't out-do the PS3 because all the huge titles will be on the PS3.

I don't know many (who am I kidding, I don't know any) people that think the Wii will out-do the PS3. But, I firmly believe that the Wii is going to take a very sizable cut of the PS3's market share, while having little effect on the 360. Microsoft has got to pleased with the way things are working out at this point. Worst case scenario for MS, the Wii gets purchased to sit along side the 360 and it takes away a game purchase here or there. For Sony it could mean a significant loss of the console purchases themselves.

All IMO of course, I really have no clue what's going to happen.

Well Sony and MS would agree with what i stated..

They have both said that whoever wins the Japanese market will win the console war.

That's the way I see it. The sample size is small, but that doesn't negate the findings. That's not to say their 100% accurate, but I do believe they show an interesting trend.
