End of XBOX360 Backwards Compatibility with XBOX1?

    The End of Backward Compatibility?
Peter Moore dishes on games you may never see on the X360 and reveals his home theater preferences.
    by Kathleen Sanders

June 1, 2006 - Microsoft has been very vocal about its desire to support the first Xbox by making all original Xbox games backward compatible with the next-gen Xbox 360 system. The goal was to make every original Xbox game playable on the Xbox 360.

In May 2005 a PR manager for Xbox told GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft's "goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new 'version' -- your original games will work on Xbox 360."

Microsoft VP Peter Moore may be taking on the role of the fat lady and singing backward compatibility a fond farewell in a video interview available today on gaming website Kikizo.

"Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility." Moore said. "We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible. More are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible -- and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compatible."

According to the Xbox website there are exactly 207 original Xbox titles that are playable on the Xbox 360. Some titles that are not currently backward compatible are Psychonauts, Lego Star Wars, and the Project Gotham Racing series.

Peter Moore went on to dish out new dirt in the next-gen console babble battle. "I think Nintendo's doing their job, in broadening the look and feel of what games are about for the consumer. And, you know, Sony wants sell high definition movies."

Moore clearly took issue with Sony's alliance with Blu-Ray, the next-generation optical disc format meant for high-density storage of high-definition video and data -- technology built into the PS3, along with a hefty price.

"It just doesn't seem like good business to burden the cost of the box and get back up to five or six hundred dollars because movie playback is the primary way that you're driving what should be a games business, into a movie format war business."

Moore also dismissed the PS3's ability to deliver output in 1080p, offering that 780p was plenty good enough for his personal home theater projector.

He went on to call out Sony's PS3 by hinting at an arguably inevitable price break for the Xbox 360 and the familiarity of launching a next-gen console in November with two SKUs and an online network.

IGN contacted Microsoft to get the official word on the fate of backward compatibility and Xbox 360. We will be sure to update when we hear more. In the meantime, let us know what games you still want to see playable on the 360 in our forums.

There's a new bwc update in testing right now that has 12+ games in it. Hopefully they don't give up on it anytime soon, or atleast not until they make the 8-10 other titles I kept compatible.

I really hope NFL2k5 and NFL Head Coach make the list before they stop.

Not yet, they don't want to name names incase something messes up in testing and has to be dropped from the update.

            12? How about 112 instead?
Then maybe all the games I have will be BC because right now there's not exactly a lot. 6% of my Xbox games are BC so yea they should do something about that since it was supposed to be 100%.

Microsoft has really dropped the ball with the backwards compatibility issue. I was a bit skepticle about them meeting their goals of every game being backwards compatible once I heard how they were doing it, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I do find it funny that if this was Sony and not Microsoft this topic would probably be about 5 pages long by now of people ripping Sony a new one.

Basically. All of his comments in that piece are bull****... "underpromised and overdelivered?" try the other way around......

In the article it says that Shane Kim said the opposite. I think the truth lies in between. Peter Moore is, and has always been, a circus performer/car salesman. He tries to razzle and dazzle but in the end he is always full of hot air.

BTW Misfit: "I do find it funny that if this was Sony and not Microsoft this topic would probably be about 5 pages long by now of people ripping Sony a new one." Those who have cared about BC, and there have been quite a few who don't, have ripped them a new one. I think it's that you would make a fanboy war statement like that. If you hate the fanboy stuff so much why not just ignore it? I try to for the most part, but every now and then a comment like this one sucks my ego in a little bit.

I think any company making claims of backwards compatibility need to wait until closer to launch or just don't talk about it, then say "we're going to try."

Rumors has it that Sony is having some issues with backwards compatibility on the PS3 right now. They could be in the same boat.

It's a REALLY NICE IDEA, but it's not always in theory that easy to do.
You need to basicallly have the same hardware time and time again, which this time both Sony and Microsoft have vastly different models than from the previous generation.

The reason the gameboy can do it so sucessfully is that, well, it's basically round about the same hardware for the past 2 decades, just more horsepower added in each new re-invention... it's not like they are going from NVidia to ATI or making some huge change. You know.

atlest put good games ... not nba live 2003 or 2002. give us nba live 05 or 06 and the earlier nba2k games.. they dont seem to pick the right games. 60% of the 200 games, no one plays.

Ive stated this before and Ill say it again. For Xbox 1 games that are coming out, why cant Microsoft put a default emulator to D/L on Live, then go the gaming companies and say "If you want your games compatible for the 360 you need to do this....." Let the companys be the ones who decide if there game will be backwards compatible or not, They would sell a lot more copies.

It's possible that Sony might be having problems with BC. Keep in mind that their approach to BC this time around is different. They're using software emulation instead of a PS2 chip in the system, like they did with the PS2 which included a PS1 chip for BC.

BC compatbility is becoming more of an issue with me because I still have a large Xbox library and games I plan on keeping. My only option at this time is to buy another Xbox as a backup or send my current system in to MS for repair if and when it breaks.

Great idea Send it to Major Nelson. I know the Burnout guys wanted to bring over their older Burnout games to the 360 but MS was no help.

Major Nelson has a new link on his site talking about the team working on the BC list. I guess Moore spoke too soon blindly or something but man that "dozen" sounds like crap. I thought they were tossing at least 30 in there. Wasn't 50 suppose to be the target for sometime in mid-June?? This is straight up crap. I definitely hope that PS3 has the BC because I might just have to cop that system.
