    Playstation 3 BC Confirmed

    Joystiqed:

IGN has a story up citing Ultra One, a Japanese monthly tech magazine whose July issue reports that the PS3 will include the unified Emotion Engine/Graphic Synthesizer combo chip that currently resides in the slim-PS2 model, thus ensuring a high level of backwards compatibility. This is a change from their claim that the PS3 would use software to emulate older games, similar to the solution the Xbox 360 (still) employs. The key points of such a decision:

It will increase the price of each unit; as the software solution approaches 100% compatibility, they will have the option of removing the hardware to cut costs.

The PS3 could use a software / hardware combination to have even greater backwards compatibility than the PS2 slim currently enjoys.
Will the system handle graphical upgrades -- similar to the 360's upsampling of older games -- if they use a hardware solution?

The good news is the system will support an incredible number of titles right out of the box; the bad news is this is just another component that may prohibit them from lowering the console's retail price quickly. Sony was awfully mum on the topic at E3, so this could explain why. Without a working emulator for launch, Sony may be presented with the unpalatable prospect of putting PlayStation 2s in their PlayStation 3s.

I never got the big to-do behind BC.

If I wanted to play my old games, I would've just kept the system, like I did with my Xbox.

It allows you to get rid of your old systems while keeping the library of games you've built up. I still have some classic games for the PSOne and PS2 and if I were to get a PS3 I would enjoy the BC. It's just a convenient feature to have and I'm glad it's becoming a standard in the industry.

If I was getting a PS3 and with BC, my biggest issue would be the same the Xbox 360 had. The fact that even though games like Halo and Halo 2 are BC, you can't transfer your saves. Since the PS3 does NOT have a PS2 memory card slot, can't do it on the PS3 either.

          Exactly.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Or they could make new systems BC, you could sell your old system for a tiny profit, and reduce the clutter around your TV by only having one game console taking up space instead of two.

Aditionally, if BC were done right, you could be contacted by people on your new system's friends list while playing a BC game. Which would be another huge draw as opposed to playing on the old system.

Very good point, EG. I think if you have a Datel Max Drive or Action Replay for the PS2, you can transfer files from the PS2 to the PS3 as long as it's compatible. What is the chance that people are going to buy a $30 device to do that.

That's one big advantage with BC, it allows you to clear out some of the old systems if you have no room.

LOL @ you two. How much room does your house not have that a 2nd console is taking up that much space?

Most houseshold Im sure have more than one tv, so there you go.

                    LOL.

You make a good point, I dont live in a box. I have 5 tv sets at home.

Sometimes people like to hook all their consoles to one tv, so maybe that's what I should have stated.

Maybe not you but from the conversation, you guys were talking like your houses were the size of an inside of a Dodge Neon.

I understand, but there are ways around that. You have more than one box connected to your tv already dont you? Cable, satellite, console, am I lying?

Anyhow, BC isnt that big of a deal to me with my 360 because i kept my xbox.

I dont think about all of the games enough to even play them much, but I'll always have that backup system, or spare, or 2nd room entertainment, or whatever you want to call it.

It's also nice to chop off $50-60 off the sticker price as well. I like to keep my set-up as uncluttered as possible, I actually don't have as much of a problem with the slim PS2 as the xbox, it's just a pain in the ***.

I like that, a Dodge Neon.

I have my 360, DVR, DVD-R, and DVD Player hooked up to my 50" in the living room and my PS2 is hooked up to the 30" in my office.

I guess sometimes it's the clutter that people hate and trading in a system to knock off some money on the next gen console is another.

Well if a system is BC then you get to sell your old system. Which cuts the costs of the new system by a good margin. (SAVE $80??? Who wouldn't want that?)

All my Xbox games are 360 compatible so I'm happy I get to sell my Xbox. What's the big deal? The big deal is you save money!

And you don't have 2 systems sitting around your TV with wires and sh*t.

Its nto that serious man. Sell if you want, and if you dont want to, dont. I just thought it was funny how saying two consoles take up too much space.

I mean, i bought my 360 at full price. No different than others bending over for ole kenny to pay more than enough for the PS3 when it comes out.
