Actually, they do this because they have to and not because they want to. They don't make any money off the console hardware itself. They aren't going to "push one out" to fill a revenue stream. It will only happen when they are afraid of Sony or Nintendo putting one out that puts the 360 to shame.

I say 6-7 years. X360, PS3 should be able to do photorealism on HDTV's. I don't see what the ugency would be in getting new hardware out. As far as graphics on a 2D screen thee 360 is almost the end of the line. There really isn't anywhere to go from there.

That's a valid point about console makers not making money (and actually losing money on each console). I still think 5-6 years will be the max lifespan for the 360 though.

I think they just want to stay one step ahead of the other guys . So if sony is coming out with theres in 2012 then microsoft will put theres out in 2011. But sony says they want a 10 year cycle out of the ps3 .

Yes sony says they plan to keep the ps3 for the long haul ,not the 5 year deal.

Of course they're going to say that. They've just gone above and beyond the ceiling for a typical 5-year gaming machine in most people's minds, so they have to justify it with "a longer lasting" machine. They have to market it as an investment, practically.

It will be like the PS2, which is on year 6, and might make it to 7.

Although it depends how long it takes to pull a profit off of the machine, if they can. MS never did with the xbox.

Off topic, but the Wii is supposed to have a very small loss margin at launch.
