Something I thought I would share

‘Slips are inexcusable’, blasts Lucas boss

10:30, Jun 15th by Ben Parfitt

The president of LucasArts has called for a radical overhaul of the industry’s business practices – with a particularly vicious shot aimed at EA.

In an exclusive interview with MCV, Jim Ward claims that many publishers don’t realise that staying on schedule and within budget is equally as important as delivering a good game – and that such practices are damaging the industry.

“There’s an attitude in this industry that says in order to make a great game, it takes whatever time it takes and it takes whatever money it takes, and that that’s okay,” he claimed. “Well it’s not okay – it’s wrong. It’s not okay in other entertainment businesses. In other businesses it’s big trouble.”

“When you have EA failing to bring Superman out with the movie, that’s inexcusable. Moving games like Medal of Honor and Godfather out of the fourth quarter -– that’s the old way of thinking and you can’t do that any more.”
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

So, he'd rather companies rush games just so that they're out on time, regardless of the quality? Or am I misunderstanding?

Maybe from a purely financial point of view it has some validity, but as a gamer I would have to strongly disapprove of this mindset, as it is the cause for many unfinished, rushed games, and the fact that they're not fully realized games does impact sales as well.

And at the same time, I just have to shake my head in disgust with what Lucas Arts has turned into. All they do is release Star Wars games, they're no longer the company they once were. They just don't take any chances anymore. I remember the times when they actually released good games that were fun to play, and were original. That's just not the case anymore, unfortunately.

I totally disagree with his banter. I mean, I understand where he's coming from, but I've seen enough crappy, rushed-out-the-door games in my life to know that as long as the product is high quality, as good as it can be, they can work on it for as long as it takes.

maybe he means that if companies actually stick to the scedule and do their best to have the game out in time, then the games would come out on time without losing any of their quality

Exactly i hate that companies bring a upcoming game to the attention to the public and say it'll be on store shelves on this day then they say " lets push this one back a few months so we can get these two out sooner"

Companies should do their best to meet deadlines and only once in a blue moon should they fail to do so. However, they shouldn't release a buggy game either. In the case of Superman though, thats just bad marketing and planning by EA to miss the release of the movie. That game should already be on the shelves.

Yeah they signed the contract for the Superman game 2 years before the movie went into production plus they moved all other tiburn games to other parts of ea just to work on this one product, i just think they failed

2 movie games that got **** reviews are 11 & 12 in top sales for May so no matter how bad/rushed/buggy Superman is it would probably sell if it was released with the movie. It has to be better than the N64 game at least.

Definately, In order for this game to market to its highest potential, it has to run along side the movie. Thye just dropped the ball here, and it makes for good criticism from their competitors.
