    ? about routers

Well, after finally getting on live last night,I have a question.
What would be a good router to get? It's a pain in the butt to keep changing the connections, plus when I do....I keep having to unplug(restart) my cable modem to recognize the connection.
Also, how reliable and expensive would it be for a wireless setup? I've done a search, but I also wanted to check here @ OS as I don't want to get a bum steer lol.
I'm not looking for the most expensive or anything, just something either wired or wireless that would get the job done. Almost forgot......is it more complicated to go wireless?(as far as setup) instead of just having wired? Thanks in advance

    Re: ? about routers

I assume you're running a regular Xbox. If that is the case, then you can pretty much go with any brand router. I had a D-Link, and it worked great. A buddy of mine had a Netgear, which also worked great.

Now, if you have a 360 or are planning to get one in the near future, the router brands I mentioned above will not work for you. Like I said, I had a D-Link, but it wouldn't work with my 360. I kept having connection problems, so when I called the support line for 360, they told me that my router brand wasn't compatitable. They recommended a LinkSys router, which has worked beautifully.

    Hope that helps!

Sorry about that, Its for the 360. Is the Linksys router a wired or wireless? Approx. how much did it run? cost wise.

Linksys is a pretty good brand. THere are wired and wireless ones. I suggest getting the Wiresless one because it is both wired and wireless, so you can go either way. They wont run you much, probably $40-$80. Depends on which one you get.

Check there or check local sales circulars on Sunday. Make sure you go to xbox.com and find a compatible router and buy one of those. There are compatible models listed from DLink, Microsoft, Linksys, and Netgear. There are some of these models that have the XBOX logo on the box and say there are "XBOX Live certfied". If you don't have a laptop or a wireless adapter, you can go with the much cheaper non wireless router.

cjones,Dave and chill...thanks for the information. I'll probably look into a wired one as I forgot....I would also need the transmitter that plugs into the back of the 360 for wireless, which I remember seeing costs $100.
Again, thanks for the info and help.

I would still suggest getting the wireless router because it still has ethernet ports for anything that isn't wireless (your 360). That way, if you wanted to run your pc wireless, you could still do that, and just plug your 360 into the same router. I have a wireless Linksys. My 360 just runs an ethernet chord to the back of the wireless router. My laptop just uses the wireless card. So, while the 360 isn't wireless, my laptop is.

              Hope that helps!

That might be the ticket! then later I could pick up the transmitter for the 360.
One quick question though......the router and transmitter don't have to be in the "line of sight" do they? If that's the case I may be in trouble,as the signal would have to due some "jogging" around corners and such.
                Thanks for the tip dQ.

Line of sight depends on walls and the concrete/steel/2x4's between the router and the bridge( wireless adapter). Its different for each person, but you should have a decent signal if the adapter is within range ( varies on whether you get an 802b or 802g router. also varies a bit with different brands). At worst you would have to get a stronger antenna or several access points to transmit the signal ( again depending on distance/objects and whether you are happy with the signal strength.

My house is around 1800 sq ft and the signal is strong all thru the house. The only time it even loses one bar is when I sit on the porch and surf the internet.

I have a Linksys wireless router and my XBL connection is great. I have the router on the other side of the basement in another room. In fact, it has worked much better than I thought. I used to have to do the whole unplug thing and it was a pain.
