How to get on Live and use the Internet simultaneously?

Guys, I've had Live for over a year now, and every time I get on I have to unhook my computer's internet connection. This means, if I'm on Live, the computer is pretty much useless.

The way I have it set up right now, I have to unhook the ethernet cable from the back of my computer, and plug it into my XBOX 360, so that the 360 is getting the connection straight from my modem.

This is getting old, and extremely annoying, especially since I would like to play NCAA online more often, but I can't hog the connection 24/7. So, is there a way that I can have a connection on both my computer and my 360 without buying a router?

    Hub.

Not this brand but any brand you want. Plug your ethernet cord into here and feed your componets.

A router would be best but a hub is a cheap alternative.

I would get a router over a hub. Hub will split your internet connection automatically, so that means your computer will get half the speed even if your xbox is not in use and vice versa. If you get a router it will only split the connection speed if both are using it at the sametime.

Router. But don't do any high-bandwidth applications, such as downloading, while playing games online unless you have a really fast Internet connection. You'll have lag in your gaming.

        Take care,

I figured a router would probably be my best option, I'll see if my sister is willing to give up the one she doesn't use...

Yeah, I just got my router today actually. I was just tired of switching the cables going from playing Xbox Live to using the internet on my PC.

Hey fellas. Having some issues with this router. Whenever I switch from Xbox Live to the internet on PC I have to unplug the power cords to my modem and router to reset the system so it works. What am I doing wrong? Here's the setup.

                Cable outlet to spiltter.
One cable of spiltter to TV(for cable TV channels)
Other cable of spiltter to modem.
Network cable from modem to router.
Xbox live network cable from 360 to router.
PC network cable from PC to router.

                Any help would be appreciated.

                  Here's the router I bought.

A switch basically just gives you more ethernet ports to extend from 1 port on a router, whereas a router actually assigns IP addresses and forwards the information from the cable modem to the PC or Xbox, and vice versa.

Hope that makes sense to you

Still not working. When I try and test the connection for Xbox live it fails the IP address portion. It says if you are using a router to make sure it's DHCP enabled. Like I said, any help would be appreciated fellas. I spent 50 bucks for this router and I was hoping it would be at least halfway decent.

I'd like to help you, but quite honestly I have no idea how. My connection doesn't involve any cords for the TV.

edit: like Mgo said, it doesn't look like you have a router.

Gotta love those Circuit City boys. I asked them for a router specifically.

Well, I guess this is what I get for not being computer savy. Thanks mgoblue, at least I know the problem isn't on my end. The problem is I'm trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

yeah...you should just be able to return it and get what you need...i hope i'm right, if the link is exactly what you got...you can usually find linksys or netgear routers cheaper than 50 bucks too, wireless even
