I don't collect anything myslef, but I know people who have this same fanatical type urge to collect things. I usually throw out all the crap I've accumulated every six months or so, aside from anything that I use regularly of course.

I smoked the cigars from which I got the bands, and every cigar I bought first because I wanted to smoke it, not because I wanted the band.

I get business cards for free during the course of normal, everyday business transactions.

So, no, I don't collect anything in which I pay simply to add the object to my collection. It's a pointless pursuit -- to me. I'm glad others enjoy it.

Not at all. My point is that I don't buy the cigars just so I can keep the bands. The band is an extra byproduct of the enjoyment I get from the smoke. Plus it helps me remember some of the great smokes I've had, and the artwork on some of the bands is gorgeous.

I'm sure this guy has bought many, many games that he never has played just so he can say they're in his collection. I've smoked every cigar of which I've saved the band. Some were delicious, some were turds. But I smoked them all and bought them to smoke them, not just so I could have the band.

The collection is the byproduct of the smoke, not the main reason I buy the cigar.

So I don't see your point.

I wish now in hindsight that I kept all my old games. Though I can't imagine how I would have stored them all (from the NES generation forward). My wife hates my expansive DVD and game collection now as it is...
