Could be a problem with the Intercooler
Yesterday my kid was playing with the 360 and he got the 3 red rings of death. So i unplug the 360 take the HDD out, keep it all unplugged for awhile plug everything back in and still the 3 rings of death. So i decided to take off the Intercooler i was having a bitch of a time trying to get it off, come to realize it is melted on to the 360's plug input. But after about a good 20 mintues i got it off, i look at the intercooler it smells burnt and looks burnt(plug area)so i hook everything back to the 360(without intercooler) and it works but i now noticed that the fan for the 360 itself does not work. I did play the 360 last night for like 3 hours str8 but i put my household fan blowing on it. It looks like i will be sending it to MS for service i have the extended warranty but this couldn't have happened at a worse time i'm liking dead rising and Madden is around the corner. So all you guys with the intercooler be carefulLast edited by rock85; 08-13-2006, 12:48 PM.Tags: None -
Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
One word of caution with the Intercooler. Make sure the AC plug is seated firmly into the back of the Intercooler. If it's loose what will happen is the machine will experience a very fast condition of losing power and regaining power. In other words it's like turning on/off your 360 so fast that you really don't see the effect of losing power.
When that happens the AC plug in the back of the INtercooler will begin to get HOT from a poor connection. Others here have experienced 3 red rings with a loose AC cord on the back of the Intercooler. Your the first to say it was melted, it doesn't surprise me, be very careful. -

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
It would be quite funny if the intercooler was the reason some systems have died. I know people who had the intercooler and the 360 still died, as I've said many times, a complete waste of $20.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
Well I have one in the package. I will return it. I just got my 360 a short while ago and circumstances came up and I haven't been able to play it all that much. I got a 2 year warranty from microsoft so I will not use the intercooler.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
I haven't had any issues "knocks on wood" with the intercooler since I bought it day one. I hope that none of my fans stopped working on the 360, I may have to double check.
Only thing now when I first start the 360, the intercooler fans make a noise that goes away after a few minutes.
I have the power supply sitting on the same level as the 360, so the power cord is seated fine.
One issue that I have always had with this product is that it plugs right into the power outlet of the 360, some power has to be lost I would think in the process.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 08-13-2006, 10:37 PM.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
I tested this last night while playing Dead Rising for a few hours. I took off the intercooler, and man does my system get really hot. The air that was coming out from behind the 360 was hotter than when I have the intercooler on. I hate how loud the intercooler is, but I think that it does help.
I'm going to put it back on and if something happens to the system than it happens, that's why I have the warranty.
Until MS releases the 360's with the smaller chipset that causes less heat next year, than we have to make due with what we have.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
This seems like an isolated incident though. If I see more of this, I'll be worried.
I should probably take it out anyway, since I never play for more than 3 hours. (actually haven't turned it on since last monday)Comment

Then try it with the intercooler on, check how warm it is then.
For me it's rather warm without it on, so I'll just place the intercooler back on and whatever happens, happens.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
It's preety warm with or without it.
I think it only gets warm with it on, because it's blowing all the hot air out.
I'm just gonna leave it on. I had 2 lockups before I got it, and have absolutely no problems after getting it. To me, this is (for now) just an isolated incident.Comment

Re: Could be a problem with the Intercooler
I'm not using my Intercooler anymore. My launch 360 died, regardless, and the loose AC plug issue shutoff my replacement 360, once. I've had it off for a couple of weeks, with no problems. I made sure to buy the 2-year warrenty with the replacement unit, so I'm good to go.XBL: Mean Greene
