Microsoft will offer an external HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 at around the end of this year, in an attempt to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will have a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive, the sources indicated. The external HD-DVD drive, however, can only play back movies, the sources noted.

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
What does this mean? The internal drive won't be able to play back movies? Or that is the only thing the external HD is capable of doing?
Bad writer, poor word choice.Enjoy football? Enjoy Goal Line Blitz!Comment

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
Sounds like it to me. The external will only be able to play movies.
Looks like I'll be replacing my 360 when that comes out. It should be quieter too with the newer chip manufacturing process.Comment

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
the HD-DVD drive will not be used for playing games. Just for movies. Internal or external, doesn't matter. It's just there if you guys want it.
That's what the article means, although through poor word choice they do imply that the internal HD-DVD drive will be able to play games while the external won't, which is IMHO ridiculous and most likely false.Comment

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
They're not releasing a whole new system. They're just replacing the traditional dvd player with an HD-DVD player. Microsoft stated before that the HD-DVD player is only meant to play HD-DVD's, not games. The PS3 is the only one that actually will use next-gen DVD tech to store and play games.crap like this pisses me off.. pay all this money for 360 with HD, all extra stuff, games, controllers, memory card etc..

I really think that article was misleading.
By the way, think about it, how is it possible that the internal HD-DVD drive can play HD-DVD games, yet the external HD-DVD drive can't? And how is it possible that Microsoft would even allow such a disparity to occur and screw over the early buyers? It's bad business, and I don't think that they would do such a thing so brazenly.Comment

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
I don't think that they will make HD-DVD 360 games as it will cause problems especially with early adopters. I think it will be strictly for movies and it's not worth it for me. I'm afraid having the 360 on for games at 2 hours + at a time, I think I would be even worse with a movie running in it for 2+ hourse. They're not releasing a whole new system. Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
Why would it be ridiculous? There are plenty of combo drives out there that read multiple media types.the HD-DVD drive will not be used for playing games. Just for movies. Internal or external, doesn't matter. It's just there if you guys want it.

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
If you read the post of mine after the one you quoted, you'd realize why I think it's ridiculous. Of course I know the HD-DVD drive will be able to read DVD's and HD-DVD's. That's not what I find ridiculous.
It's the idea that only the internal HD-DVD drive can play HD-DVD games while the external HD-DVD option for Xbox 360 users are SOL because that option will only allow them to play HD-DVD movies and not the games that are based on HD-DVD format.
I don't think Microsoft would alienate the early adopters by changing their stance on HD-DVD (their stance was that HD-DVD would only be used for playing movies, not games). Another thing that I find ridiculous is the idea that there's any significant difference between the internal and external HD-DVD drives that would make only the internal HD-DVD drive able to play games while the external drive can't.Comment

Re: Microsoft to release 360 with built in HD DVD Drive
There's a point if you don't have HD-DVD to begin with and you want to get a relatively cheap player.
It's the only reason anyone would go for an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive.
And that too will be without HDMI support.Comment
