SCEA VP: PS2 Beating the Xbox 360

    >> Gamedaily.com talked with Jack Tretton (Sony Computer Entertainment America's Executive VP) and here's what he said about the Xbox360:

Everyone knows how successful the PS2 has been, but what's a bit surprising is that the aging console has been outselling the Xbox 360 in recent months. Furthermore, according to the NPD Group's TRST data, the Xbox 360 is actually off to a slower start than the original Xbox. Looking at retail sales for the respective consoles' first nine months shows the Xbox at 2.55 million units and the Xbox 360 at 2.21 million units.

"What I've read widely and what I've heard from MS is, 'Yeah, we got beat last generation but that's because we were late to market and came out a year after PS2 did and that's why we got defeated and that's not going to happen again.' Yes, the PS2 was beating the Xbox 5 or 6 years ago, but now the PS2 is beating the Xbox 360... Year-to-date we've sold more hardware than they have and this past month we've sold more hardware," Tretton boasted. "So we beat them in their last generation machine and we're beating them in their current generation machine. And if I were Microsoft, the big concern I'd have is... Xbox 360 is actually doing worse than the original Xbox did."

He continued, "I think there's less consumer interest in [terms of] pure numbers for their new system than there was in their previous system. I think the thing that's concerning to the industry or to anybody involved in generating income from it or I would assume to Microsoft is that they're the only supposed next-generation system out there. They have the market all to themselves... and they're doing worse numbers. To me that says the consumers are either not satisfied with what they're seeing from 360 so far or they're waiting to potentially purchase another system from a competitor or stick with what they're currently playing. So if that is the future of the next generation then this industry is in a whole lot of trouble because it would show a decline as opposed to growth."

You would think the 360 would be the market leader but damn talk about a *** whipping.

The one question I have in all of that is what are they reporting? Is it the amount of hardware bought by gamers, or is it the amount bought by retailers? I can't tell you the last time my store sold a new PS2.

The more I hear Sony trying to spin things in their favour with stats like this the more I think I should just go with MS.

lol, that is so true, they are bragging about an aged system that is $350 less and has a 6 year lead on them with 8x the games available...

              Sony are morons.

The battle will be between PS3 and 360...see if they will be bragging about that...

Well it still is notable, and it diminishes MS's headstart when the PS2 still outpaces it.

You can't look at it so narrowly either. If the PS2 keeps up with the 360 through the end of the year and the PS3 sells it's mil, Sony can declare victory with the PS2 + PS3 total sales.

I think this also has to worry Sony and is the primary reason for slow 360 sales. I don't think this is a case of people waiting for the PS3 as much as the general masses simply aren't willing to shell out extremely high amounts of money for consoles and higher priced games when the gameplay isn't much better if at all. The graphical improvement from the PS1 to the PS2 was a much bigger jump than the leap from PS2 to 360/PS3. Furthermore, they were able to improve other areas of gameplay when they went from the PS1 to the PS2. What real gameplay improvements have been achieved on the 360 (or future PS3) that couldn't have been achieved on the PS2/XBox? I only see a graphics update and nothing more. I'm sticking with my PS2 for at least another year which still has nice graphics (if not eye-popping).

Look at the success of the DS versus the PSP. You could make the argument that the PSP is next-generation graphics compared to the DS yet the DS is outselling it. The answer is because graphics aren't the answer and that's the only real thing next-gen is bringing to the table. People are more interested in fun games, regardless of graphics, and low prices are a real incentive to people. Great gameplay and low prices are great reasons to buy a system while a graphic update is not.

The PS2 is now a real cheap system with a ton of great games and is selling extremely well despite the fact it could be abandoned by game makers in the near future. Its own success could very well be a bad sign for ALL next generation consoles.

Actually that fits right into my argument. Just pretend the PSP was outselling DS by a good margin, the GBA picks that slack up and then some, therefore Nintendo still is the victor. I highly doubt that is still happening at this point(gba outselling PSP), but I think it can happen again, this time in the console front.

having 1 BA 360 game would sell a lot of systems, for me there's nothing that i really want to play on the system. and i own one. i find myself playing the more polished current gen titles and not even playing my 360.

this will all change next week with nba 2k7 of course. the football games suck on 360 imo and i'm waiting on forza 2.

I can't believe you guys read that article. I just had to respond to this crapola of a time waster before I left. Is there even a serious reason for this? They're like a big mouth wide receiver that is dwelling too much on a past when they're pushing for the future. I mean, aren't they pushing 1080p, Blu Ray Technology, the cell processor?? YET, they still dwell on the most unemotional Emotion Engine being the number one seller?? Logic is just ridiculous in the video game industry.

I agree with you...I haven't played, heard, seen anything truly innovative and thoughtful on next gen that adds to gameplay...just updated graphics.

I guess the wii will inovate gameplay...but that is system/hardware innovation. The game developers aren't doing anthing (outside of graphics) w/ the 360 games that they couldn't have done on xbox.
