Opinion on a game from '05

So I went to the video store yesterday hoping to get the PS2 release of Just Cause, NBA 2K7 or Lego Star Wars II. All three games were gone but I did rent an interesting little game called Yakuza.

I had heard something about it so it's not like it was a total surprise. So did many of you guys play this game? Did you enjoy it? I'm enjoying the game a lot. The controls can be a bit twitchy but the story more then makes up for it. Interestly I hear there's going to be a Yakuza 2 coming out soon. I think i'll have to look into that.

actually, I believe Yakuza was just recently released. Gamespot says 9/5/06

They do have info on Yakuza 2 but release date is TBA.

Anyway, sorry I dont have anymroe info on this but if its the game that was just released, let me know how you like it. This one is/was somewhat on my radar but not really sure.

ah ok hmm some mod should change the topic of the thread then...I must've mistaken the copyright date for the Japanese release.

Anywho it's a great game where you play as a disgraced member of the famous Japanese Yakuza. The story is a bit complicated but needless to say it centers around you being released from prison after 10 years and seeking to find out what the hell has happened since you got thrown in the slammer for "killing" the boss of your crime family.

It also has to do with 10 billion yen being stolen from the crime family and you having to find out who stole it and why.

The story is pretty deep. I think it'd work if it was translated into a movie. As I said before the controls are a bit twitchy but overall it's nothing to complain TOO much about. You can play the game to be very linear or roam around in a limited sense as well.

I wouldn't recommend it for younger gamers as there's TONS of swearing. I'm about halfway through the game so that should tell you that it isn't the hardest game in the world as well.

Overall I give it a 7.5

the game is great, but I'm of the school of thought that these kinds of games should be in japanese with english subs...at least make it possible in the options. English actors always suck at these games. Some of the dialouge in this game reminds me of the stuff from shenmue.

But I'm way behind on the story because i keep doing side missions and random fights with morons who think they can beat me.

A friend of mine actually recommended this to me last week, saying it was a really enjoyably title and that the game world itself was impressive. I did some research and IGN just reviewed it less than a month ago, I haven't picked up a current-gen title in a while but I think I'll go rent it.
