Japan retailers report spike in 360 sales...

Xbox 360 is suddenly lighting up retail tills in Japan. Pre-orders began for the company’s Blue Dragon bundle yesterday with many retailers reporting a sell-out.
The special-edition, of which there are about 10,000 units, sold out almost immediately, with the further 90,000 standard units selling fast. Next-Gen spoke to a number of retailers in Tokyo who reported brisk sales or sell-outs of allocations.

The bundle includes an Xbox 360 core system with Blue Dragon as well as other bundled games for a bargain-basement 29,800 yen. The Special Edition features various freebies including a faceplate.

This bundle is a last desperate gamble by Mirosoft to break the Japanese market, whch has hitherto shown little or no inclination to be swayed. But Blue Dragon has been winning plaudits across Japan. Severe shortages of PS3 are only adding to the allure of this bundle.

Yes, you read that headline correctly.

Microsoft's 10,000 special edition Blue Dragon Xbox 360 bundles were available for preorder yesterday - and now there are none. Some retailers are reporting that their allocation went in just five minutes yesterday morning, and the additional 90,000 standard bundles are also reportedly selling like warm scones, too. The special edition costs just 29,800 Yen (£134) and come complete with a core Xbox 360, a copy of Blue Dragon, a Blue Dragon faceplate, Blue Dragon calendar, and a set of five miniature characters.

Is this the start of a revolution in Japan? Maybe. Maybe not. We'll see over the coming weeks whether or not the momentum can continue.

Blue Dragon might be that title that sells 360's like it did with the preorders.

I think Lost Odyssey can do the same thing... MS is gonna need a lot more JRPG's than those 2 games to try and break in on foreign territory

I'm still skeptical of these numbers. Even the xbox had limited editions only for japan that would regularly sell out. The crystal xbox was in japan first I believe, and people in America were importing them.

I'm not saying this is the only reason these numbers are up, but people love to get the japanese special edition consoles. Not all of these are going to end up in japanese homes. They'll be up on ebay or yahoo auctions real soon.

It's still sad that a collectible bundle is the only way it can sell. That means there's no real way they can sustain it. People won't be buying 4 or 5 360's, unless they are in fact going to auctions. MS needs to actually target japan with the games they like.

it's one game though. The 360 sells more in one month in the US than what Japan sells in a year. Any big game will cause a "huge" jump in console sales I guess.

If MS can't keep the momentum going, however small it is, all they'll see is a bunch of cheap 360's flooding the even cheaper 2nd hand market.

                Japanese RPG

Blue Dragon is a role-playing game from the developers of Chrono Trigger in which young adventurers battle evil with their blue shadow monsters.

that's true, but the article also states that they have also been selling the remaining of their 90,000 units.... wutever that means....

X360 still won't be considered a pimple on Sony's *** when it comes to sales. One reason for the spike may be, that all systems coming out are shown to freeze, so that might be it.

The Japanese is real bias. That sucks. If we turned that way Sony wouldn't be crap.

They're selling a machine that regularly retails for 300 dollars with a pack-in game that is probably the biggest 360 title that will hit Japan over the next year for an American equivalent of $250 bucks. If it didn't sell-out I'd be surprised.
