    I know it's cliche but...

I know, I know...it's been asked a million times before, but I'm really struggling here and I need some advice/guidance. I wouldn't call myself a die-hard gamer, which is why I have come to you all for assistance.

Basically, I'm in the market for a next gen console and I simply cannot decide between the PS3, Wii, or 360. I'm an all-around gamer, meaning I like sports as well as other genres. I like the 360 mainly because I like nice looking graphics and because it has alot of games that I enjoy. but with it having a year head start, I'm worried about it being yesterdays news and being shadowed by the Wii and PS3. Also, I don't like the reports of faulty systems that I continuously hear. The PS3 looks to be the total package, but besides the price, I'm worried about it being a total bust. I mean, what exactly does it have that will make me want to pay $200 more for it than the 360? and the launch titles. I love sports games and want to purchase some at launch if I buy a PS3, but we remember what happened last year with the 360 sports launch titles. They were horrible and it took a year for developers to get it right (somewhat). Not only that, but we all know that the PS3 is way more difficult to develop games for than the 360, so how horrible could THESE launch titles be?
    <O</O
Then there’s the wii. The concept of innovation is nice...but I'm starting to think that it's more of a beefed up gamecube and nothing more. Look at the graphics...when compared to the 360 and PS3, they have a long way to go and I've already established the fact that I like pretty graphics. Then it's major drawing point _motion-sensitivity) is being imported to the PS3 and 360 with this new fusion thing. Not only that, but the only true launch title that appeals to me is Zelda. The virtual console thing isn't too shabby either, though. I love the price as well. Bad thing is, it release on a sunday and I have church...meaning I probably wont be able to camp out and snag one, and I doubt they'd have anymore available around 2:00 that evening.
    <O</O
So that's my dilemma. I know it's been asked a million times and I can understand if you all don’t want to answer it again, but please...help a brotha out

Re: I know it's cliche but...

It's basically what you want to pay for, what games do you honestly want to play now, is a solid online a factor, do you like gaming with friends, what systems they have, how important is next-gen media (Blu Ray vs. HD DVD), what exclusives are appealing to you, how much you're willing to pay for a system. I honestly like what I hear about the PS3 so far but it's not my style as of right now since I have a system in my house. If the PS3 takes off and does well down the line, then I'll definitely pick up one for the exclusives and 1st party games that they have. I honestly like some of the things that they have as their first part and I definitely am curious to see what the next couple of years bring about. I think that the 1080p argument right now is useless only because I'm not that into resolution. As long as it's high definition, I'm fine.

PS3 will be much harder to come by compared to the 360 due to the little things that are factors. Do a process of elimination and make the pick. Best way for you to make a choice.......

Re: I know it's cliche but...

If your only going to buy one then it comes down to which games that will only be on that specific console do you like the most.

      Halo 3, Fable 2, Banjo Kazooie, etc = 360

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc = Wii

      GT, GoW, MLB 07 = PS3

I didn't list games like FF or MGS for the PS3 because they aren't first party games, so technically they could show up for the other two consoles even if the odds are very low.

I know you state several times that realistic graphics are important to you, but they aren't everything. The Wii's graphics are/will be better than the original Xbox, but they won't be close to the potential of the 360 or PS3 because of Wii isn't investing a lot into Hi-Def gaming. All the IGN reports on Madden for Wii sounds great and it sounds like EA is really taking advantage of the Wii controller. I know PS3 and 360 are taking a look at motion sensing, but I don't think they'll be as extensive as the Wii-mote.

Personally, if I had an unlimited budget, I would have picked up the 360, an HDTV, plus Xbox Live and then a Wii as well. I don't need another DVD player, even if it is HD or blu-ray, so those aren't selling points for me on 360 or PS3. In reality, since I'm a college student and don't get paid a whole lot, I'm going with the Wii. Plus, like you said, the virtual console "classic games" is going to be so much fun.

If you are a sports gamer but also like other genres, I would go with the PS3. You have more options there for sports games because of the 1st party sports games.

That's VERY questionable from the recent trailers I've seen. Nothing on the Wii looks as good as a recent top-budget Xbox release. Red Steel is the only thing I've seen that's close, and the textures don't look that much different than Shenmue on the Dreamcast. But the lighting is quite cool in Red Steel.

That said, Nintendo clearly is emphasizing gameplay over the latest technology.

Hell, I would wait, if I was you. Wait a few months to see if any of these things happen:

            1. Any 360 price cuts in the New Year?
            2. Any improvement in the 360 console's appalling build or design quality?
            3. Any prevalent defects in the PS3 console at launch?
            4. Any sports games for the Wii other than Wii Sports and Madden? Will 2K support it, or will EA offer any more support than Madden and Tiger?
            5. Any RPG's coming up soon on the Wii other than Zelda?
            6. Any post-Christmas sales?

If you're an online gamer, then the 360 is a no-brainer. I don't care what Sony or Nintendo offer for online gaming; Xbox is the clear market leader and will continue to be in online console gaming. Xbox Live is the one thing that MS nailed right from the get-go with this console generation, and it only has improved XBL with the 360. Online gaming is the cornerstone of the Xbox experience, and it shows.

            Good luck.

            Take care,

From several people I've talked to who's seen Zelda in motion on the Wii, all have told me it's one of the best looking games they've seen in a long time.

Yeah, but that is only one game... people are saying the same thing about GoW on the 360... and I'm sure the same will be said about MGS4 once it hits the PS3...

Each of the 3 systems will have their share of "must-have" exclusive games. If you can look at the lists of exclusive titles for PS3 and 360 and pick out which list you like better, that should be the console you go with. I would eliminate the Wii automatically as you are really big into graphics and sports games. Madden may be a blast and the games won't look ugly, but those two areas will probably be the weakest of that console.

Regardless of technical specs, the PS3 and 360 will probably end up getting very, very similar versions of sports games every year as the Xbox and PS2 did. If the extra money is worth it to you to have the chance of possibly getting slightly better looking sports games, then go with the PS3. If price is a big issue and you'd accept the technically lesser system(like millions did with the PS2 vs. the Xbox), go with the 360.

For me it was all about price and exclusive titles. Halo 3 alone pretty much sold me on the 360, others like Gears of War, Banjo-Kazooie(hopefully!) and Fable 2 are only icing on the cake. I have no use for the Blue-Ray player and it turns out that I get a lot of enjoyment out of online play, so the 360 was the right choice for me.

PS: No matter what you do, wait until the PS3 hits the market to see if they have problems similar to the 360 at launch.

It doesn't hurt when your girl picks up a 360 for you though.

Nope, that certainly doesn't hurt at all!

Regardless of that, I would have gotten a 360 eventually.

                          6. Any post-Christmas sales?
That's probably the best advice you'll hear. The next 2-6 months are going to reveal a lot about next-gen gaming. If you can wait about 4 months, I think you'll have a good idea which way to go.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

One other thing to consider: If you don't have a PS3 pre-order slip in your hand, you're not getting one until 2007 unless you're willing to pay MUCHO dineros.

So if you're looking to go next-gen before New Year's, you can eliminate one console from your list.

                            Take care,

Thanks a ton guys for all of the advice.

I'm not totally sure yet, but right now I'm leaning towards the 360, mainly because it has most of the games I really want to play. Saints Row, Dead Rising, GRAW, GoW, Smackdown vs Raw 2007, College Hoops, NBA 2k7, Madden, and I'm probably forgetting a couple of others. Also, I'll be able to skip launch day and not have to run the risk of coming up empty handed.

Thanks again, and more advice is definitly welcome.
