Rumor Mill: Sony Plans To Charge Developers

GameWatcher is a website that provides news, reviews, and guides for video games. We cover the latest games and provide in-depth analysis of them.

We've all heard about the PlayStation 3 Network system which is going to let us download demos, trailers and other goodies for free. This is very nice of Sony but are they going to be just as nice to third party developers? The answer appears to be no.

The nice chap from kotaku, Brian Ashcraft reports that Sony is considering charging third party developers to cover the costs of Demo downloads and other files. We'll let Brian do the talking:

"Several industry insiders report that to cover demo download costs, Sony is currently considering charging third party developers. Here's what Sony is apparently thinking: Every time an individual downloads a demo, a service charge will be passed onto the third party developer. So they will pay for you to try out their games, instead of vice-versa. Unconfirmed, but it seems that this way the PS3's online service stays "free," Sony cuts its loses and third party developers get reamed."

If Sony does decide on taking this route then it would mean the PlayStation network system will probably not feature as many demos as you would of hoped. We'll have more on this as it comes.

I guess that's what happens when you own and run your network i.e. Microsoft. Sony doesn't have this luxury and I agree that most developers won't bother with putting up demos on the PSN.

Just a rumor, but if true, this is a dumb move. I'd rather them just charge for the service, even though it isn't close to Live.

I wonder if this will actually deture 3 party companies from even making games for the PS3, or possibly charging more for there games to try and make up some of that cost. When your charging a 3rd party company any money for stuff like that and Sony plans to sell 10million PS3's in one year it could get VERY expensive no matter how small the fee is. Could be good for 360 owners.

Re: Rumor Mill: Sony Plans To Charge Developers

If I didn't know any better, it would seem like Sony is just a little arrogant when it comes to this industry.

With every (honest) developer crying how much more difficult it is to develop for the PS3, and Sony not helping at all in this regard with relatively poor development tools, it sure does seem like Sony is throwing their weight around.

They need to be careful. With less and less exclusive titles, there is not going to be much seperating the 360 and PS3. The shift has already begun, where a LARGE portion of games are getting developed for the 360 first and ported to the PS3 (complete opposite of the PS2/Xbox). Sony needs to realize that MS is not someone to sneeze at. They have very powerful hardware that is easy to develop for, with an online component that can be completely out of the devs' hands and the best dev tools EVER for any piece of hardware.

The same arrogance that did Nintendo in with the N64 seems like it will do in Sony inevitably. There are alot of parallels. Hardware out a year later, poor launch lineup, media format that was forced upon everybody and support from the top almost non-existant.

Be careful, Sony. Nintendo's and Sega's third pieces of hardware did them in because of ARROGANCe and a naive sense of dictatorship. We as consumer's need Sony to thrive because competition is good. But seemingly every decision made with the PS3 is the wrong one.

I see this as good news.

With PS3 games being on BD-ROMs, developers can just throw on any additional items onto the disc, and put them up for download on the XBL Marketplace on the release date or generate faux exclusive content by releasing it on XBL at a later date.

But, hey, Sony shouldn't give developers like EA a hard time, right? Just keep charging us for stadiums, alternate uniforms, etc. Uh-huh..

Either devs can throw any "extra" content on the disc or declare it exclusive 360 content. It could go either way, but this is a subtle power move by Sony--especially if the PS3 hits their sales target by 07's end. Otherwise, it'll easily backfire.
