    XBOX 360 Question

My 360 started malfunctioning the other night. I narrowed the problem down to the console itself, not the games.

The problem essentially consists of the game locking up with checkerboard pattern / snow on the screen, or just going black.

After consulting with 360 support, they indicated they would initiate the process to repair it under warranty.

    My question is this...

Could I possibly have a short in my av cables?? The red lights come on on the console, which makes me think it is an internal hardware problem, but I also noticed the color going bad on my lcd tv at the same time my console malfuntioned. However, after disconnecting the 360, my tv is fine.

I thought maybe I would go by a replacement set of cables any try it out, if that is a possibility.

Not to hijack this but rather than start another thread I'm having a somewhat similar problem so thought I'd see if whoever reads this might have feedback for me too. My system is just freezing....is it due to the overheating? It doesn't happen a lot but usually it's after playing for 4-5 hours. I think I got mine about 2-3 weeks after launch.

I do have the Best Buy extended warranty so I could take it back there but if it is overheating are the newer units any better? I just don't want to bother exchanging it if a newer one will do the same thing.

It could be overheating if you play 4-5 hours at a time. I would wait for it to die then go to BB and get another one.

            Re: XBOX 360 Question

I had the same thing just happen to me last month. At first when I popped in NCAA Football, I got to the coin toss screen and when they went to kickoff, everything went black. No picture or sound. Then after unplugging everything and plugging back in, I got snow on my screen and was hearing some funny noises from the console. So I powered down and left it as is for about a couple of hours. When I turned the console back on againeverything was fine and I could play my games normally. So I thought that everything was fine and was just due to overheating............wrong.

Things worked fine for about a week and then same thing happened. Black screen, snow on the screen, checker board pattern etc. Then after powering down, I let the system cool off for another couple of hours. When I went to turn the system back on, I get the 3 red rings and the system would not even turn on. I knew my system just bit the dust.

Good thing I bought a product replacement plan from Best Buy. They looked my system over and gave me a new system....so far so good. My first system was manufactured on Jan 13, 2006. And this new one was manufactured on July 12, 2006. I did have to but a new replacement plan but at least to me I think it is money well spent. Also I did ask the people at Best Buy if my system breaks again and I have to replace it, I could get a gift card for the amount I paid for the system and choose to get something else (maybe by then the PS3's will be easier to get).

Hmm. Well, that sounds exactly the same. Guss it's fried and I can forget about the cables.

Was playing last night and over a 4 hour period it locked up 3-4 times...the first couple times were within the first hour or so. Then tonight I had my 360 for about 30 minutes and it locked up while I was putting in some friend requests.

Next question....since I still have one of the very early releases I can still send to MS for repair? If so, will they fix or send a new one? Trying to decide if I should work it through MS or just go to BB.

If you purchased a BB extended warranty then go to BB, if not call Microsoft and they'll send you a coffin.

I bought mine in February, and it was manufactured in January. It died about a month ago, and MS said they would repair it. But instead of just fixing mine from January, they sent me a newer one, manufactured on 9/26/06. The MS guy I spoke to said that since it was within 1 year of purchase, the MS warranty was in place. There must be something due to the early purchasers where they know there were flaws, and they decided to extend it to 1 year? I know others have reported newer versions that died after about 90 days and were hassled by MS.

The good news is that they sent it back pretty quick, they received it on a Tuesday and by Friday they sent it out. I had it back by the following Tuesday. Works like a charm too (but I can't help but fear the 3 red lights every time I turn the thing on!).
