    Resistance = 17.75GB of garbage

    Anyone here this?

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

Resistance: Fall of Man was billed to be the defining game for why Blu-ray exists in the first place. Resistance developers Insomniac stated that the game took up 22GB of space and that all those bits and bytes were necessary to make the game work. It would seem that ripping the disk in Linux shows otherwise.

I'd actually be pretty disappointed if a developer found a way to max out the disc space on a launch title.

Compression makes this a moot point, for now.

Resistance could probably fit on a DVD-9, but the bigger capacity allowed them Insomniac to get lax with compression.

We won't see the advantage of the larger capacity until two years from now. Even then, with the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace, developers could nullify the advantage by releasing the core game for both systems and uploading anything that can't on a DVD-9 onto the PSN or XBL.

We'll see how this turns out, but right now, it could go a lot of ways.

I think that one reason some people are upset is that Sony has touted for a long time that all PS3 games need to be on a BR because they will be too big. I guess we will see 6 mths to 1yr from now on how much space each disc takes before saying much.

Well, in that timeframe, Sony needs a game to justify the existence of the system. Metal Gear Solid 4 and maybe Lair will be the games to probably do that. I seriously doubt they'll reach the disc capacity limits, either.

As I said before, developers could nullify any advantage by putting out the same core game on both, and leaning on downloadable content.

              Regardless what future games hold:

"Resistance developers Insomniac stated that the game took up 22GB of space and that all those bits and bytes were necessary to make the game work."

So it is if fact true that Resistance is mostly filler, Insomniac isn't very truthful.
I'm still not sold on the notion we will see very many games hold enough real game data to justify BR other than cut scenes etc. outside of gameplay.

If this is true and my math is correct, this game would fit on a single layer dvd.

I can't see games getting bigger because that might take ideas from sequels, prequels, and other things. Especially games like R:FoM. If it's not true, it's probably because they didn't want to use up so many great ideas for this one and wanted to make sure they had goodness for the next one coming out. This seriously makes me disappointed in Sony. Horrible how they try to manipulate the very ones who are trying to support them. Won't go speaking out of body until it's more official, but man this sure doesn't look good.

You do know that Blue Dragon on 360 needed 3 dvd's right?

Games will struggle to fit on dvd soon.

Yep 3 dvd's. Changing discs mid game sucks nuts.

WOW! I had no clue that the game was that big. What MS needs to do and I don't know if this is possible, but it would be cool if they also offered multi-disc games on a HD-DVD that you could play off of your HD-DVD player. That would allow people that have the HD-DVD player to buy the HD-DVD version instead of the mult-dvd + it could encourage more HD-DVD player sales.

That makes no sense in that article though. They said in uncompressed form, the game is 30 gigs (which is insane), but in compressed form they fit it on 3 DVD's. A DVD is 9 gigs, 3 of them is 27 gigs. So, someone is lying somewhere.
